250 have signed a petition objecting to the potential loss of dedicated disabled car parking spaces in Wrexham Town Centre.

The petition, which was launched online last week comes ahead of this afternoon’s re-hearing of plans to convert the former Oriel Wrecsam, Rhosddu Road, into a new town centre police station.

As we reported last month proposals to convert the former Oriel Wrecsam, Rhosddu Road, into a town centre police station had been deferred following an objection over the planned removal of eight dedicated disabled vehicle car parking bays.

A campaign opposing the loss of the spaces was launched before Christmas, with fears that the police station plans in their current format could have a ‘detrimental effect’ on disabled car parking in the town centre.

So far 250 have signed an online petition opposing the loss of the spaces and a formal amendment is being proposed this afternoon to make Egerton Street exclusively for Blue Badge holders and deliveries and add extra spaces in the Library car park.

AVOW- Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham has since issued thanks to the 250 who have singed the petition objecting to the removal of the Blue Badge disabled car parking from Rhosddu Road.

In a statement released by AVOW over the weekend, it notes: “The campaign was launched before Christmas in response to the proposal to remove 8 disabled blue badge car parking spaces which are a vital part of the designated spaces available in the town centre.

“The alternative put forward by the developer is mot like for like and does not make provision for the needs of disabled people as there would not be designed parking bays with adequate space for disabled people to exit vehicles on ramps if they are in a wheel chair.”

The Council Planning Meeting which is open to the public to attend will be held at 4.00pm this afternoon at the Guildhall. The meeting will be webcast live on the Wrexham Council website here.
