A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a Wrexham leisure centre last night.

Fire crews were last night called to reports of a fire at the former Plas Madoc / community run Splash Magic Leisure Centre in Acrefair.

The fire was confined to around 14sqm of the building and three crews from Wrexham and Johnstown attended the incident shortly after 8pm last night.

The team as Splash Magic issued a statement last night, saying: “We can confirm that there has been a fire at the Splash Magic Leisure Centre this evening. We are currently working with the Fire Service and Police to establish the cause. Thankfully the damage was mostly external and was contained to one area of the building.

“Therefore the Pool, Gym and Cafe will be open tomorrow as usual. Sportshall bookings and fitness classes may be affected, so please call the Centre on 01978 821600 to check tomorrow. Thank you everyone for all your messages of support and we hope to see you all in the Centre again very soon!”

North Wales Police this morning issued a statement saying that a 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson and released on bail.

DCI Neil Harrison said: “A joint investigation with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is underway and I am appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact police on 101 quoting crime reference S152406.”
