Callous thieves set a 30,000 volt electrical pole alight in Chirk this morning.

The fire took place at 6.07am close to the B4500 in Chirk as thieves attempted to escape with valuable metal.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said those responsible had put the lives of both themselves and firefighters at risk and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Earlier this week a Wrexham.com FOI request uncovered the shocking extent of Wrexham’s arson problem.

Andy Robb from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “This type of criminal behaviour puts not only the lives of those carrying out the activity at risk but also the lives of firefighters attempting to extinguish the fire as well as any members of the public who may attempt to tackle such a fire.

“I would ask people to stay well away from electrical fires of this nature and to contact the fire and rescue service.

“We are working closely with local policing teams to combat deliberate firestarting – arson is a serious crime and in conjunction with North Wales Police we will pursue prosecutions.”

Anyone with information in relation to deliberate firestarters is urged to contact North Wales Police on 101 or anonymously via Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Marchwiel car fire

In a separate incident at 5.32 this morning a car was deliberately set alight on Piercy Avenue in Marchwiel. Police and fire officers are appealing for help to identify those responsible.

Andy Robb from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “This incident comes after a spate of car fires in the Wrexham area recently. Those responsible have no regard for public safety and there is real concern that such a fire could easily spread and endanger lives.

“We are advising residents to keep an eye on their own vehicles as well as watching out for any suspicious behaviour around other vehicles in the area.”
