Hundreds Attend New Look Wrexham Glyndwr University Open Day

Wrexham Glyndŵr University welcomed hundreds of prospective students and their families on campus for the first open day of the year.

More than 200 people visited the university to meet with lecturers, tour the site, listen to innovative talks and take part in workshops.

There were various activities and presentations held, including spectacular shows in the immersive learning dome, and robots Sheldon and Baxter were on hand to entertain visitors with their moves.

Prospective students were also able to pick up a copy of the new revamped guide to undergraduate degrees and courses.

Nikkita Griffiths, from Liverpool, wanted to find out more about the Broadcast, Journalism and Media Communications degree.

She said: “I’ve got my place sorted on the course already but I really wanted to come and have a look around and meet with the tutors – I think today has really helped me.

“I’m really excited to start here in September and the students past and present have been amazing, helping with tours and generally talking to everyone. I visited a university in Liverpool but it was so big and busy, whereas here it is so lovely and has a really personal feel.”

The open day – held in the main sports hall for the first time – also included one-to-one talks on student funding, disability support and welfare, as well as subject-specific presentations on the main campus by lecturers from Youth and Community Work, Occupational Therapy, Education, Childhood and Family Studies, and Aeronautical Engineering Design.

There was also a business talk by Alice Murray from Giggles and Games and an Introduction to Science and Environment.

Sam Wright and Polly Pancosta, both from Shrewsbury, attended together to find out more about the Social Work qualifications on offer.

Sam said: “We met the tutor who was very helpful in telling us what the course was like, what to expect and what we should be reading.”

Luke Mallia, from Ruabon, added: “I thought I’d pop in as I’ve not looked around the campus before, and I’m unsure whether to apply to any universities or not. I’m thinking of studying Humanities or Theatre Performance.

“I’ve found today really helpful. I’ve met some of the lecturers and now just have to think about what I’m going to do.”

The day also included the chance to explore the North Wales School of Art and Design on Regent Street, which was holding workshops and presentations on Design Communication and Fine and Applied Art, such as ceramics and jewellery.

At the same time, the university’s Northop campus hosted a subject-specific event highlighting degrees including Animal Studies, Equine Science, Wildlife and Geography, Ecology and Biodiversity.

Lecturer Sally Harrison, for Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Communications, said: “We’ve had lots of people interested today. It has been great to meet so many fantastic and enthusiastic students. I even had a year eight pupil visit me as she’s already interested in coming when she’s older, which is brilliant.”

Saffron Grover, Associate director of Communications, Recruitment and Marketing, added: “Our open days have always been popular but we wanted to take them to the next level so they fall in line with the fresh new approach we are taking towards recruitment and ensuring prospective students get even more from us while they’re on campus, as well as continuing that relationship when they begin their studies here.

“The university has many strengths, none more so than in bringing people together, being at the heart of the north east Wales region and giving those who might not have previously had the chance to study for a higher education the opportunity to do so.

“We are all about community spirit; when you come to Wrexham Glyndŵr you are not just a face in the crowd, and that’s something we wanted to get across at our open days and through our new campaigns.”
