Horse Chiropractor visits Glyndwr University’s Northop Campus

A horse practitioner has offered a helping hand to equine science students.

Claire Jones, from Equine Outline, gave Northop Equine and Animal Studies students from Glyndwr University a demonstration on how to identify and aid back, neck, pelvic and musculoskeletal problems in horses.

The horse practitioner visited the equine centre at Glyndwr University’s Northop campus to present the demonstration and lecture on the McTimoney-Corley chiropractic technique for horses.

Claire said: “Some horses really like being worked on but it depends on the personality of the horse. But we work with horses over several treatments and they usually get better the second time round.

“We’re just helping the body to work properly and then it will go do it on its own. There’s no time limit of how long to treat a horse as bodies change and with horses their bodies can change with the seasons.

“I think this technique is better than just physiotherapy alone. We can’t fix what’s broken but can aid it.”

During the demonstration on Tuesday (March 15) Claire looked at two horses Smithy and Taylor – showing students how to identify if they have any medical issues by watching how they walk, trot and respond.

Claire also talked to the students about how she become a chiropractor for horses and how to get into the field.

Tamsin Young, Senior Lecturer in Equestrian Psychology, said: “The insight into the McTimoney Corley Spinal Therapy provided by Claire today has been invaluable. Our students have specific interests in both the health and welfare of the horse, and this practice adds another alternative to them in achieving this.

“The Glyndwr equine degree helps students to understand and apply new and existing scientific principles to the management and training of horses whilst respecting equine welfare.”
