Default Tour of Britain comes to Wrexham again

Stage 2 of this years Tour of Britain (Monday 8th September 2014) From Knowsley to Llandudno passes through Wrexham and Mold. A great chance to see the top cyclists in the world passing through our town.

Lets hope local businesses and Wrexham Council get behind the Tour and put on a welcome for visitors who make Wrexham the place to view the race. No decision as yet as where sprint stages may but it would be great if we could attract a sprint stage nearby to attract visitors.

I think it's great but I very much doubt many on here will agree. Last year the general tone was negative due to perceived damage to local businesses and some minor traffic disruption. They don't pay road tax you know.

You may be right Ferret and not many on this forum may be supportive. However the Tour passing through Wrexham was well supported and hopefully local businesses benefited from the extra footfall and the council benefitted from revenue for car parks etc. It would be nice if Wrexham celebrated the visit of the Tour with window displays, street stalls etc and attracted visitors for the event and made it something not to miss.

Don't start the 'road tax' thing again - you know that some people don't know there has been no road tax since the 1930's. Bicycles would pay zero VED anyway as they don't pollute.

Wrexham council will not be that bothered..........they are not stopping in Wrexham and therefore unable to hob nob with the cyclists and get their picture in the paper.

It's a pity that Wrexham is only part of the through route and not a time stage as that makes a massive difference to the number of visitors. There is unlikely to be many extra visitors to town to see the race as the real fans will go to a time session spectator stage. For those of us not real fans but curious may hang around waiting to see the riders but one minute later they will have all gone.

That is all that happens on a stage race. There is a series of races that do laps around a city but that's a different type of race. You will find towns will have had to pay to be a start/finish town which would see more visitors.

The Tour of Britain only has one time trial stage (London) and the first city centre show stage (Liverpool). With the best will in the world Wrexham can't really compete with those cities - we just don't have the scale. As our thinly diguised Leeds fan friend says there are costs involved in a start/finish even if it fitted the schedule - and remember the fuss over the money spent on the Olympic torch event. Listen, it's not going to have a massive impact but the police do a pretty good job of the rolling closed road. One of the main arguments for saving Plas Madoc is health & fitness and what other sport is going to bring world-class athletes to Wrexham? A day off for all the boys and girls I say.

It did seem well attended by kids last year - St Mary's etc are on the route so could be just those, but would be good to see a wider policy !

Its true that towns and cities bid to host a start or finish and perhaps Wrexham isn't in the market to be a host town. As I understand it, the on route (Yodel) Sprint Hot Spots haven't been decided as yet and perhaps this is an opportunity for the town.

If not then why not try to organise a day to encourage people to get their bikes out. Have a "Dr. Bike" event where people can blow the dust of the bike in their shed, bring it along to be services (if possible). Invite Sustrans, British Cycling, the Cycle Tourist Club, WCBC Road Safety team, Wales Tourist Board, cycle holiday providers (and others) to have stalls giving out advice and information, hold town centre cycling events including 'learn to ride' and 'improve your road skills'. I don't think this would cost a fortune and would be a means of attracting people into the town to watch the race pass through.

Agree with you 100% but you have this type of pond life in Wrexham

"The it's time for all right minded motorists to get a nice set of bull-bars fitted and rid the roads of the unwashed, untaxed, uninsured, smug, law breaking, bad manered louts who hide under the name of 'cyclists'."
