Default good site - Wrexham listed buildings

Don't know if anyone has seen this - a good website with pics showing most of Wrexham's listed buildings. Worth a browse.

Great site..

It should be mandatory reading for every councillor on the planing committee...

What does listing mean exactly though? Who has to make decisions with reference to these buildings? The town planners? There are one or two of these buildings that are being allowed to fall into disrepair. Water damage is a big problem. It seems to me that some of them are left until there is no option but to demolish as with the old Vegetable Market. In my opinion not enough care is taken with our heritage.

Here's another good page on the council website:

http://www.wrexham.gov.uk/assets/pdfs/planning/wtc_assessment.pdf

Some very sensible observations made on the condition and apprearance on some of the town centre buildings, although this report is 2009 - not a great deal of evidence of the management plan being put in place.

Some interesting points on page 4:

Inappropriate shop fronts and signage:

The appropriate size, design and illumination of
signage as well as the quality and style of shop
fronts is essential in maintaining the character and
appearance of the Conservation area. The use of
inappropriate materials and designs that bear little
relation to the traditional property continues and
needs to be addressed in clear guidance and more
stringently enforced.

Underused buildings:

Many upper floors in particular remain vacant resulting in a lack of
maintenance and deterioration of the structural fabric,
which degrades the overall appearance of the street-
scene.

Vitality of the Town Centre:

The retention of retail units and encouragement of mixed uses is essential in
ensuring the vibrancy of the Conservation Area both
throughout the day and evening.
There remains a lack of activity throughout the centre after normal business
closing times.

Nice to read about some of the buildings you walk past every day without a thought.

Should Waterworld be listed as a 60 year old iconic structure?

It isn't 50 years old yet.
