People (particularly motorists) seem to believe that car parking should be free or as cheap as possible. However, car parking has to come at a price. Motorists expect a metalled surface with good drainage. Motorists expect good lighting plus security. Motorists expect marked-out bays to park in (given that some motorists can’t park in a straight line). And they expect some sort of monitoring or control to make sure that everyone pays. Remember the old car park where Simplygym is now? Do we want to go back to those days?

That all sounds like car parks in Prestatyn, Broughton, Trafford Center etc. etc. all free parking ;)

Wrexham has to do something to attract people in! not distract them as is happening now, and car parking in Wrexham is a big factor…

So if they council change the cost of parking to 20p an hour in the council run carparks, who is going to pick up the shortfall that the council will lose in terms of revenue from the car parks?

Many people still won’t shop in Wrexham, so it won’t entice everyone back. Those that do come back will quickly find themselves going again because the carparks will be full and no one will park. Word will get around that there’s no point going to Wrexham cuz you can’t park and then we’ll be back to square one again. Then what services will Wrexham and the people of Wrexham have to be denied to make up for it?

That sounds like council logic/excuse to me ;);) as I have said on another thread look what free, yes free parking has done for Prestatyn, go take a look at Prestatyn as an example, it has transformed a town that was pretty much like Wrexham dying on its feet..

Whilst I welcome this move, its not aggressive enough.

What the town really needs is ‘very cheap’ i.e. 20p short stay parking widely available all year round. This will really allow the town centre to compete with the likes of Broughton, Cheshire Oaks and provide a cheaper alternative to Chester.

I understand the financial constraints the council are under, but this has to be a priority area.

Spot on, an all year round 20p or less for an hours parking, totally agree a step in the right direction, but as someone said they still haven’t quite got it :mad::mad:

There are at least 4 major categories of people who park in a town, those who live there, those who work there, those who shop there and those who visit there.

Given the money that has been put into Destination Wrexham, it is clear that those who run the town think that the Visitors and Shoppers have to be a priority for the town’s marketing department. This is not rocket science. Many jobs and livelihoods depend on the inflow of spend and it is a presumption that shops, hotels and a whole range of services depend upon people coming to Wrexham (as opposed to elsewhere).

It is vital, therefore, that the big welcome mat is put out for the town’s customers and every effort should be made to shoe horn people into this town (as opposed to its competitors). If the Eagles Meadow charges are held down by forms of pressure, good. If they rise, every imaginable other way should be found to keep Car Parking charges to a minimum for Shoppers and Visitors to the town.

One way the Town Council could approach the alternative parking strategy (that is their own Car Parks) is to focus on the different types of Car Park users described above and create a more nuanced parking policy. Car Parking for 8 hour + users in Wrexham (all day parkers) is relatively cheap in the Peoples Market at £3.00 especially when it is compared with the same levy being imposed upon a visitor to the town/shopper who is only using the car park facilities for (say) 3 hours+. 8 hour + users are usually workers in the town or individuals who live there. The Council must adopt strategies to take the burden off the Tourist and Shopper and I would like to see either all Car Park users pay lower tariffs or, if there has to be revenue raised, an emphasis on raising one set of charges and lowering the other. This will not be popular but will be wiser than present. Workers may well choose to walk to work, use a bus, Car share, ride a bike or come on a train; they may opt to park at a higher tariff. They will, however, still come. Shoppers and Tourists will not

That does pretty much sum it up, but I would still look at a free parking for at least an hour, again this has been mentioned before, that there is no end of people who just want to slip to town to go to a couple of shops and that’s it, but as it is won,t go if they have to pay and therefore the town looses out..but however I disagree with you about the rocket science if people in charge of car parks can’t see this :D

It has been mentioned before, the FREE 3 hour car park right in the center of Prestatyn where the new shopping center has been built has absolutely transformed the whole of the town, not sure who owns the car park, I don’t think its Tesco… but hats off to whoever set it up there.. :):)

If I remember rightly, the housing development on the old Brymbo steelworks was to include shops, offices, a school and a link road. Have any of those things materialised other than the houses?
The developers can promise you the world, but whether they actually keep their promise is another matter, and it seems the planning department at Wrexham council can do nothing about it.

And there lies the problem, it always comes back to Wrexham Council, who as always will take the wrong option for Wrexham ..

The truth is that the developers will be sensitive to the interests of their customers (the shops) who in turn are sensitive to the interests of their customers (the shoppers).

The same logic does not apply with Councils who regard the Rate paying shops as a cash cow to be milked even where there is no milk to be had. One reason that they don’t focus on the state of play in the High Street is the way that the rates are collected. Firstly, the rates don’t directly go into their coffers and secondly, if the shops are unoccupied, rates will still be paid in certain circumstances.

Of course, as the real effect of this is now being understood, many Councils are wising up and thinking beyond the immediate and getting their head around the abstract.

It just happens that some Councils are brighter than others (or perhaps more intent on encouraging enterprise and less on spending money)

Very Good :) Wrexham must be bottom of the class:rolleyes:
