MP1953Participant
It will fail. It’s not wanted, it’s not needed. It’s in the wrong location, and it’s being pushed through as a vanity project that will ultimately be a big white elephant. It’ll kill what’s left of the market, as the arts hub will be promoted and people will forget the market is there.
Ironic, as there is no market for an arts hub. If there were, Glyndwr would’ve set one up at one of their sites, given that they’re home of the arts in town. They haven’t.
It’s as doomed as WH Smith.

And that is the crooks of it in a nutshell, and despite an online survey suggesting otherwise what most of the ordinary people of Wrexham would say and think …..
MP1953Participant
Could someone please explain how a building that has been closed for 13 years suddenly has an asbestos problem as the Leader of the Council stated this morning– as a duty of care should this nit have been known from day one when it was first moth balled — if it is an issue now was it an issue when pupils where there during the rebuilding of Clywedog and Rhosnessni. How many pupils and teachers have been contaminated over the years?
Emotion wont keep this building open!! What should be investigated is the health of those that have used the school over the years.
As I understand it, Asbestos has never has been a problem unless it is disturbed i.e. cut up, drilled, damaged or whatever, it is the dust from the asbestos that is the problem, that is why it is a specialised job to remove it, there are probably loads of schools, buildings etc. around that are still made up of asbestos..

Have a walk around town and ask say 200 people and ask them would they support this project, if you got more than a handful I would be very surprised, personally think it is the City Status brigade at work once again !
How about the 95 people that replied to the online consultation?
“Nearly 60% of respondents (57.32%) agree with the proposal to have an arts and cultural
space at the People’s Market with comments such as “Any cultural improvement will lead to
a social improvement in the long term.” It was felt that it would enhance the visitor
experience in Wrexham; boost the local economy and jobs and give an identity to the town.
There were also those respondents that felt that there is no place for art in Wrexham and a
large proportion of those not in favour cited the loss of the market and market traders as
being detrimental to the town although the project will actually include market stalls and will
increase footfall to the area and attract new audiences to the market.”Reference:

People who would take the time to fill in an on line survey would be in favour, as I said go round the town with a clip board !
MP1953Participant
I understand your concerns, but the numbers we are talking are not that large in context.
How much does the existing Oriel lose per year? The figure quoted is not incremental. The turnover must be significantly lower at the moment due to the small size and exposure that the gallery receives.
With regards to ratepayer subsidy, its £1.5m capital from the council, for a >£4m regeneration project (surely good value for the Wrexham ratepayer, a worthwhile refurb of the market for retail purposes would surely cost more than £1.5m).
The on-going costs at 80k/year, i’m sorry don’t seem excessive. Its an arts centre, the opportunities for direct revenue are limited so actually that is a relatively low figure in the wider scheme of things. 80k in social or education would not stretch far at all, and to my previous point – this is education provision. Just because it is not text books and teachers doesn’t mean it does not have significant community benefit.

MP1953Participant
Disappointing how they are prepared to subsidise a facility that will benefit, well, potentially nobody but refuse to subsidise town centre parking which would benefit the entire town economy..
Very true, how many Wrexham people actually used the old Arts Centre! as a side note I worked on the building of the old arts centre in the seventies it was never used that much even in the early days when it was first built and I don’t see this new one being any different.

Or perhaps neither of you have the intelligence to consult the rescheduled dates as shown on the bin collection calendar!
Quite agree. In addition to Ben’s post, in the time it took to write the initial post, you could have checked the council website or telephoned them.
You are correct Ben (for a change!) the change of day is on the calendar, I thought I had checked obviously I did not look at it properly :( All is forgiven Wrexham Council !!!!!!!!!!!!
MP1953Participant
I put my bin out this morning as usual, as I thought that they were back to normal collection days, but no its still out and full!
So, how come the bin men were required to work the Sunday [27th Dec] after Christmas, but not Sunday [3rd Jan] after the new year. Most people would rather have been home at christmas and then work on the 3rd.
Says it all really, Wrexham Council cannot even organise bin collection correctly :)
MP1953Participant
A council officier stated at today’s planning meeting that failure to approve the proposed new town centre police station plans for the old Oriel Gallery site within the Library building, would see the proposal fail. Now would that be such a bad idea? The Arts Centre could return to the library building with some new additions, the People’s Market could remain a market and the Council could save a loss of £900,000 over ten years. Looks like a win win situation!

And of course probably 90% or more of people “WHO LIVE IN WREXHAM” would agree with that sentiment, but will it make any difference to Wrexham Councils decision, will it H*** !
MP1953ParticipantAnd its not just on pavements, its in parks as well, yes a lot pick it up but even then there is residue left, they should carry some sort of disinfectant or something, I would never let my children play and roll about in parks as we used to do, Parks these days are just S*** houses for dogs.
