Alun you have been around retailing in Wrexham for many years and recognise that there has been limited partnership working between business and the Council – additionally though there has also been lots of bad blood spilt over the years between retailers. On going battles between ‘town’ and Eagles Meadow retailers have been around with blame games going on and now EM is in the same position as the town with huge vacancy rates.

Until all parties – retailers . Council, Welsh Government and the public start to work together , a mantra that has been chanted for many years.

People talk about people shopping in town but her is a definition: – How many people actually go to town to do ‘shopping’ or do most just do to specific shops they have already decided as they have a specific purchase needed. Local people generally are not browsers apart from the odd special occasion such as birthdays etc.

“Shopping is an activity in which a customer browses the available goods or services presented by one or more retailers with the potential intent to purchase a suitable selection of them”

Ioan I appreciate these Centres do a good job but when I read the story I could not see what was different to what McMillan does or the Hospices which also provide the more general support as well. Also if it is a Centre it will have limited access for a wide area of North wales if people have to travel in excess of an hour either from the East, West of South of the region – rather than in localised support centres.

Fully agree that the issues being dealt with should not be ‘politicised’ by any Party

The criticism of the cost of Ty Pawb as an arts facility was not that it should be a ‘profit’ earner but the fact the level of subsidy is growing every year when it was supposed to have a diminishing level of subsidy.
The income from the traders is approx. 50% of what had been planned as a number stalls are free and not income generating the same as the income from the car park.
Jimbow – where did you get your figure of 600,000 footfall – the traders in the stalls would dispute that level of throughput!

Any of these types of Award can create a buzz in an area and get people involved but when yiu see the full list of applications Wrexham County like Wrexham FC is still in the non league compared with other applicants. – https://www.expressandstar.com/news/uk-news/2021/08/20/record-number-of-areas-across-uk-bid-to-be-crowned-next-city-of-culture/

The success of any application is engagement with local people — what did the Council do before they submitted an application – virtually nothing, no meetings (virtual or face to face). The Council in Wrexham have the arrogance that they can do these types of things by themselves.

Why did they not engage with people like Evra Rose and others who are part of the Culture in the area? It is sad to say that the Wrexham bid is a non starter due to no engagement.

The Council failing in Culture is typified with Ty Pawb and the massive subsidy required to keep the doors open – hand the place over to those people who know how to engage and have the enthusiasm to make the white elephant into a shining example of community culture.

The price of building materials has rocked over the past two months but still does not come up to a £200k build cost. These properties are going on a site that already has the infrastructure in place such as drainage an utilities so the groundwork costs will be a lot less than a green or brown field site.

The cost does not include land as it already belongs to the Council.

This type of over inflated new build by Council and other Social Landlords is an issue across the whole of the UK. The issue is as soon as grant funding is introduced land value and build costs become inflated as their are guaranteed income from Welsh Government. If open market building for the same level of funding perhaps there could be at least another 3- 4 properties.

Fully agree that an enquiry is needed now – we know we will have Covid and variations around for a long period of time. There is a ned to review what has happened over the past 18 months as the virus spread and mutated. We are told that the Delta variant will have changed again by the winter as it adapts to changes in temperature. Hopefully we will not be in the same position as last winter. Now is the time to review last winters response before we hit what will probably become label as forth wave that will bring many challenges despite so many people having being double jabbed.
We are already seeing number of people who have been double jabbed being hospitalised as they have underlaying health condition often without knowing they had a condition.
The more research that can be undertaken the more likelihood that there will be better clarity as we face the next 12 months.

Surely the issue is whether Andrew is a nice guy or not or what Political Party he belongs to – it should be does he have the ability to fulfil the role oin, the shirt term from behind a computer. It does not matter where the computer is located but how he performs the role. If he is failing to carry out his duties he should do the honourable thing and site down.
