IMHOParticipant“Actually, there was a referendum in 1975 to join the EEC and it was made clear that it was more than just a trade organisation, so this argument that ‘they just want to keep having referendums until they get the result they want’ can be applied to leave supporters with equal, if not stronger, force.”
Correction, the referendum in 1975 was to remain or not in the “common Market” as it was mainly pushed, not to join or not as we were already joined up without being asked.
The last referendum was over 40 years ago so the remainers could at least have the decency to wait a similar time for a re-run, yes? No?
IMHOParticipantWill the remainers please, instead of saying, “we want a people’s vote” can you please use the correct terminology which is, “we want a second referendum on Brexit” (because the first one didn’t get the result we wanted). If we did have a second referendum and remain won by a narrow margin, would we hold another? It would seem only fair as the leavers would be able to use much the same arguments as the remainers did, shirley?
IMHOParticipantI could have quoted multiple posts but this’ll do for a start;

“What’s the cost of bringing this in then IMHO? I note from the article that rather than being an attempt to impose the Welsh language on people, this scheme is to support and encourage parents who do wish to raise their children bilingually. I think you’ll find that the amount spent on promoting the language is relatively modest compared to the majority of frontline services. If you come and live in Wales, don’t be too shocked when some of your hard-earned gets spent on boosting the indigenous language.”I don’t know the cost, do you? If the parents speak Welsh then the child will speak Welsh, if English (most likely) English it will be so, the actual point of the measure must be to encourage the parents to speak Welsh and if they can’t speak Welsh, to learn it as that is pretty much the only way their offspring is going to pick it up in the early years. The measure reeks of an Evangelism that one usually sees connected with promoting a religion; is that what pregnant women really need? Well Liam, you at least admit you are fine with millions of pounds of tax money being spent to prop the Welsh language up instead of going into essential services. At least you are honest but, don’t ever let me see you crying here about the lack of funds coming from the council for social services, old folk care, homelesness et al.
I have been sniped at for calling the language useless well, in an international sense it is, as absolutely nowhere else in the world speaks it. The article in question here speaks of “the advantages” of being bi-lingual which, is, misleading as having two languages where one is useless anywhere in the world except it’s home country is not, in true terms, being bi-lingual. English plus French, German, Spanish for example is really going to assist a person in their travels abroad, Welsh isn’t.Anyhow, those of you that have “had a go” at me for bringing it up, will you please answer the question, are you happy that millions of pounds are spent on promoting the Welsh language instead of going into essential services? and, oh. yes, please do not give me the BS about it being a small amount compared to “front line” services as we have all seen how our councils are taking measures to save not just millions but a few thousand. We for instance, have seen the introduction of car parking charges for the disabled in order to raise a few thousand pounds so a few thou. from the welsh language support budget could have saved that.Too simplistic? perhaps, but, you get the idea.
IMHOParticipantThe Monitor;
Yes i am English, i live and pay my taxes in Wales so i do have a say in what goes on.
As far as insulting the Welsh Language goes, it could be said the a large majority of the Welsh people do that daily by not using it or, are unable to speak it so, get off your high horse and answer the question. Do you think it’s a good way to spend much needed money, money that could be put into ESSENTIAL services instead. I have said on here before and i’ll say it again, anyone who thinks that spending millions on propping up the Welsh language should never complain about services elsewhere being cut to the bone.
IMHOParticipantAbout the Welsh language thing. Whilst getting some cash out of a machine at Tesco i was, as usual, asked if i wanted Welsh or English so i, of course, went for the English button whereupon i noticed the button itself was quite worn, this prompted me to look at the Welsh selection button which was, upon inspection, quite pristine. I checked the other machines and they were the same. Telling is it not that very few, it would appear, select Welsh.
If the Welsh people are happy with the Welsh assembly spending millions on propping up the Welsh language and at the same time forcing councils to do the same whilst the vast majority of the population speak English then fair enough it’s their tax money but, at the same time should not complain about cuts to vital services due to lack of money.
IMHOParticipantANON, It’s likely it wouldn’t be £70 if paid quickly more like £40 but i stand to be corrected on that; the Warden was obviously exercising restraint and discretion which is what we are usually asking of them so stop moaning and get a life.
IMHOParticipant“would of made more sense to of had techniquest share with Ty Pawb and turn the whole place into a interesting space for visitors.”
Would of? would of??? Dear dear :)
IMHOParticipantI agree, renewing on-line is probably the way a lot of people go but, i have to say all the phone shops were busy (except EE) with the o2 shop being the busiest so, a lot of people using the shops too. 3 are’nt closing a shop down, just moving it to another, more successful (they hope) location so, they must think shops are still needed. Anyhow, another empty shop in Eagles Meadow, not good.
IMHOParticipantThe 3 phone shop is relocating to The Grosvenor Shopping Centre Chester because “Wrexham is dying” i was informed yesterday.
