So the new prison will on paper have what they call Level 3 health care provision , by definition that means 24 hour care including inpatient beds, but here in Wrexham the inpatient beds have been excluded, so any prisoners that require a hospital bed will be taken to the Maelor Hospital. Why has the largest prison in the United Kingdom been built without inpatient beds ? Surely this is something the Planning Committee should have highlighted before granting Full Planning Permission. If the Wrexham prison functions similarly to others, like Northumbria , we can expect in the region of 125 – 150 visits to the Maelor Hospital per month from the prison.
