At the Executive Board Meeting the voting was 7 to 2 in favour of closing Plas Madoc Leisure Centre. The two votes against were from the Wrexham Independent Group.Cllr Bithell seconded by Cllr Lowe then proposed to defer the decision, this was defeated. Not to be outdone six further members of the Wrexham Independent Group then signed a ‘Notice of Call In’which meant it had to go before a Scutiny Committee.
I find it hard to believe that eight of this group of ten can hand on heart justify the losses incurred in running Plas Madoc Leisure Centre. Is it a case of following their Leader like sheep?or is it they all belong to Plas Madoc Water Polo team.

Maybe as independents they can try to act for the people rather than the party.

I have an extreme distrust of Councillors who stand for election as an Independent and then, when elected, form a political ‘group’.
Using the accepted dictionary definition, an ‘independent’ is a person who is “free from influence, guidance or control of another or others” or “affiliated with or loyal to no one political party or organisation”.
Irrespective of the topic under discussion, ( in this particular instance, Plas Madoc) that person should vote as conscience dictates, not at the behest of a pseudo ‘leader’ of a bunch of political misfits, afraid to nail their real political affiliations to the mast for fear of being unelected.
They can be classified as neither fish nor fowl and certainly not true to their electorate.

Oh, I don’t know. Perhaps they are being true to the people who elected them judging by the wide amount of support that the leisure centre has. You can’t accuse them of towing the ‘Party’ line.

They have voted on the side of the upswell of public opinion, whether you believe their motives in doing so are genuine or not surely that is being true to your electorate? Also you will find very few unaligned i.e. truly independent councillors on most local authorities, I guess because it’s difficult to have any influence on big decisions such as this otherwise.

Two Cllrs that have brought this to the Scrutiny meeting are from Cefn and Llangollen, whilst the two Cllrs on the Executive Board are from Johnstown and Penycae all hotbeds of support for the non closure. This must have a bearing on how they vote.Cllr Mark Pritchard from Esclusham another hotbed of support, had the bottle to support closure. This is about real money not about retaining their seat at the next election.

Is their job to reflect the views of those they represent or blindly vote through cost cutting measures that could damage a neglected area? Many of the cost saving figures relating to Plas Madoc have been torn apart and no explanation provided for discrepancies. What alternative areas could be looked at to provide a £96,000 saving?

It is such a pity that party politics is being brought into the Plas Madoc issue with point scoring. The main issues of budget overspends needing to be cut back is managerial/officers responsibility. Why then has a facility that has supposed to be losing so much money not had expert commercial consultation in to find potential income sources or a different funding model years ago even before the current administration.
The real problem lies at officer level for not maintaining the property as part of an on going scheme of works. Who decided that they needed money spending on new corridors and office plans in the Guildhall rather than on Waterworld– spend the money on services for the community not to smarten up your own offices!!
