Surely by definition, if the cuts are less, Wrexham as a whole benfits? Means public services are cut less… council taxes don’t have to raise as much…
I don’t agree with this Labour administration in Wrexham, but you know that already. You also know the scale of the financial issue that the council faces. Anything that reduces the burden on that, and creates jobs and movement in the local economy is a good thing.

As for super prison, I still think that this is just negative hyperbole. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the scale of this project. But I don’t think it’ll be as negative of an impact as you like to make out.

I guess the question becomes, where do you draw your inmate limit? I think they’ve hit it right.

A super prison is good for the image of Wrexham, is show we are not just a small town but a big important town & capital of North Wales.

This is good news for a prison on the industrial estate where I work, it will add local jobs & good for the town where visitors will stay & spend some money helping the local economy.

Don’t we have enough though of own home grown low life without attracting low life from other areas? Their defence is often that they come from deprived backgrounds so bringing the friends & relatives of those from those same backgrounds to visit is really going to help us feel safe is it? Our area would have to make an absolute fortune out of it for me to be happy about it. Super schools – super prisons. Super used to mean something great when I was a child.

Zinger, if that’s the way you wish to choose to talk about those in jail, is there any real hope in trying to rehabilitate them? – Not all criminals are perpetually bad people, and neither are they going around the revolving door of the justice system.

Some of those people will be put into the new prison, which will make sure the family ties don’t break down any further than they potentially are at present. This helps to ensure that people are not going down the path of a ‘career criminal’

I do take issue with you saying that ” so bringing the friends and relatives of those from the same backgrounds (etc etc)” I think that is shocking. Not all people from the same background now work as if they are the same person.

I understand that it’s a contentious issue and I think we will be making fantastic gains out of this project. We need employment. Employment will help reduce the number of people who are attracted to a lfie of crime.

Maybe I shouldn’t have sounded off so strongly but Super anything now-a-days gets my hackles rising. I do get upset when I hear of a normal hard working person being sent to prison for something unintentional, when you get people who set out to rob the elderly, abuse children, carry knives or shotguns, setting fire to buildings or vehicles, doing crime under the influence of drugs or alcohol getting lesser sentences. If the criminal justice system didn’t make such a mockery & the police followed up minor crimes before they escalated then it might be different. What is the statistics for these people re-offending?

And I completely agree with that statement Zinger.

But I think one of the key prolems we face throughout the entirity of the UK, is 1) a rising population 2) a decline in the ammount of prison space we have

As a result of this, it becomes more more likely that people get reduced sentences. We need the space to keep those who need to be in prison kept in there.

I’ll have to look up the re-offending stats, if I remember rightly, by in-large… it’s the minority that are the mass repeat offenders.

I’m sure I read somewhere, a long time ago that jobs for a super prison couldn’t be guaranteed to locals as this would discriminate, but preference would be for welsh speakers. I can’t remember where it was I read it now though!

According to the BBC website this development will create something in the region of 1000 jobs, perhaps someone could clarify exactly how many of these jobs will made available to LOCAL people. I can appreciate this project will have some commercial benefits to this area and I totally appreciate why there will be differing views on it. I’m all for something that puts Wrexham ‘on the map’ but a maximum security prison the size of the fricken death star isn’t ideally what I would have had in mind!

That sounds about right Shaun, although it’d be silly to guarentee jobs to locals in areas where many of them have never had experience. I think it’d be premature to suggest that there would be 0 jobs coming to locals however.

Surely there are many positions that would not require specialised experience? I would imagine the likes of catering, housekeeping positions would not NEED to be farmed out as surely there are plenty of able and willing local people suitable to fill them. As for the building of this development are there really no suitable Wrexham based contractors capable of being involved in its construction? I think that it should be insisted that a reasonable percentage of this work be put out to local tender TBH.
