tommillerParticipantThe logic which is usually quoted to justify relatively eyewatering rises in Chief Executives’ pay (as in Wrexham’s case) is that if they don’t get annual pay rises (usually way above inflation), then they will up sticks and go. Whatever happened to duty, to service, to loyalty? Are these just for the minions? In order to stop this immoral practice, someone, somewhere, sometime, needs to have the guts to say ‘go, then’. Where would they go to? Wage inflation in the higher echelons of the UK workforce is becoming a serious issue. If you have time, research a few Chief Executives pay – council or otherwise. You’ll be in for a shock. Oh – by the way, some have pay ‘freezes’, and huge increases in ‘bonus’ payments.

CondeParticipantI think it is disgraceful, the whole situation.
You have got dubious behavior from the Leader of the Council ( where have we seen that before!)
The richest getting richer whilst the rest of us take an effective pay-cut ( real-terms cut, that is)
Each one of her increments, is half of the salary of a Modern Apprentice. When the council and others in the public sector say that there are too many NEETs (Not in Employment, Education or Training) in Wrexham. I think the last lot of figures I read said just under 1,000 under the age of 25.
Surely we should be looking to bigger organizations or at the very least, the leaders of these organizations that are supposed to be for the good of the public, to turn around and divert more money for these type of schemes.
Based on the logic her salary goes up by half a full time apprentice per year… is it fair to say that she puts in the extra equivalent workload that an apprentice does?
Does it hell.January 10, 2013 at 12:01 am #58077
Y FfinParticipantBeing a chief exective means you should lead by example. The current CEO is much better than the previous incumbent, but she has missed a trick here to win over public opinion and to gain the respect of her staff. Across the public sector, people have accepted the pay freeze because of the state of central and local government finances. Here in Wrexham most council employees have been asked to take on extra responsibilities and to take up the slack left when people have retired or been made redundant and not replaced. They haven’t been paid anything extra for this additional work and neither should the CEO. When we have got out of the hole we are in and the economy is growing, then people in the public sector should get a pay rise that reflects the service they give to society.

Very well put!Councils in England have been given funds to enable them not to increase council tax. The Welsh Assembly Government has also been given funds to do this but has chosen to use these funds for their own purposes (buying an airport maybe?).

IcemanParticipantDo we want councillors that talk down to us and are completely out of touch with the electorate? They should listen to the people who put them where they are. Most people have had a pay freeze and those are the lucky ones who still have jobs. Remember this on polling day!

CondeParticipantThe Chief Executive and the Councillors are different entities Iceman, but I take your point.

The airport fiasco could possibly be the biggest future financial millstone around Wales’ neck for this century.
