Wrexham PC RepairsParticipantI’d personally like to see another designer clothing shop as I either have to go to Chester to buy the clothes I like or shop online.

barryjarvisParticipantPersonally, I’d love to see a lot more independent shops – Locally owned, locally produced, locally funded.
It’s nice to have the big named shops, maybe for those times you need a tin of paint, a lettuce and an iron at 3am (here’s to you Tesco ;)), but shopping no longer exists like it once did.
Not so long ago, when you went shopping it was a full few hours, out the house by 9am to get a parking space, get in to town, do a few shops, stop for breakfast, few more shops etc then home with bags galore.
Now, it’s too easy to get everything from the one shop – with that comes quality (or lack of). No one shop can specialise in everything. What i’m getting around to, is i’d like to see more shops doing what they do best and not trying to be everything to everyone.
When Woolworths closed down i thought would’ve been a cracking location to divide up in to a mini-mall. Get it filled out with independent, boutique style shops. Maybe a couple of deli’s. How about a nice little ice cream parlour. Fill it with colour, style, smell. Everything to get your senses going.
Look what happened there instead…I think the reason Chester is more popular with local people, is because Wrexham is cheap, bland, tacky and some other words that i can’t think of right now.
People like to think that they’ve bought something a little special, a little unique – that’s why the rows in chester do so well.Granted, not everybody would want those kind of shops as they are generally more expensive that what we have now. However, I’d most definitely prefer to support the Wrexham economy if I didn’t feel like I was going to get mugged by a gang of 8 year old tracksuit wearing kids coming out of one of many discount stores.

Philip OsborneParticipantAlong the lines of others who have mentioned independent shops, I’d like it if there were sort of “specialist areas” in town that gave at least a sector of the visiting public a reason to visit each part of town. For example, there’s a number of empty and derelict shops in Pen-y-Bryn, the ones that are open offer a jumble of different services or products.
Imagine if the wedding dress shop was to move from Pen-y-Bryn to Charles Street where there is a hairdressers, a photographer, a beautician, a florist, a seamstress … they could work together, hold regular “Charles Street Wedding Festivals” to jointly promote all their businesses, and market the whole street as a destination to visit.
And back in Pen-y-Bryn, there is a great second-hand music and DVD store, a tattoo shop, imagine if Sgt Peppers rebranded and re-opened as a live music venue, perhaps in partnership with Central Station, and The Music Place and Guitar-a-rama were also to move into Pen-y-Bryn to join them and you could create a whole independent music specialist area of town that would attract more businesses of the kind.
Creating these specialist areas would give life to areas of town that are currently neglected and create the kind of atmosphere that is impossible in the more corporate commercial developments like Eagles Meadow.
The independent stores should work together, and play to their strengths. Trying to go it alone and compete with the big boys on what are really their strengths, you’ll just lose and leave the town full of pound shops and discount stores!

Philip OsborneParticipantI was going to add this to my previous post, but you can’t edit after ten minutes:
Meanwhile, despite the success of the retail parks and Eagles Meadow, the main streets in town such as Lord Street and Church Street still serve as the busy thoroughfares for people to get across town, walking between the retail parks, or from the bus station to Eagles Meadow. There’s no shortage of passing trade, and introducing these extra “specialist areas” just gives people even more reason to criss-cross through town increasing the level of footfall on the main thoroughfares, hopefully encouraging some of the bigger businesses back into town again.
Introducing a ShopperHoppa (or whatever the new bus service is called) just gives people an easier way to bypass these streets and ride their way from the bus station to Eagles Meadow … make them walk! At least then the people are there and it gives businesses a reason to open up in the town again.
Sorry if some ideas seem to clash with each other … I haven’t thought through a complete town plan and business proposal, it’s just various ideas I’ve had!

tremaultParticipantI’ve been trying to start a business for almost a year now.
main obstacle is getting some funding to start off.
nobody will borrow to somebody who was mugged off by barclays and ended up with a £3k debt.
so I have to start off with the absolute minimum.
struggling to even do that with no funding assistance.
but who knows, you may see my shop sometime soon. fingers crossed.
I’d like to tell you what I will be selling but I hope you understand i want to keep it under my hat until I can actually start.I’ll talk about some other ideas I’d like for the future though.
I’d like to see a nice restaurant/cafe that sells decent proper cooked food and not at a fortune.
local well priced ingredients from local businesses, cooked in bulk to keep costs down.
I’m thinking of the same kind of attitude as Ramen shops in Japan. the food is local so it is cheap.
also, it is health and hearty. I am thinking of food like lamb stew, pot roast, farmhouse soup, etc.
if nobody opens such a place in the next 5-10 years, I may do so myself.i just think it’s really important to promote local, quality and healthy products.
I’d also like to see more specialty drinks like ale and root beers etc. have you seen how much wild dandelion there is?!June 21, 2012 at 12:18 pm #56285
ScottParticipantI’d like to see a Gap store in Wrexham & perhaps a few other decent clothes shops

Stuff like that is awareness I think – people default to Wicks and B&Q as they know no different.

I used to get annoyed in GAME when people would buy stuff they didn’t need & at top price too. Usually parents for their kids around Xmas time
