MP1953ParticipantAs a start I agree that blue badge holders should pay for car parking, because someone is disabled does not mean they can’t afford parking, better if it was free for everyone mind ;) (wink, wink !)

Do you know how difficult it is for disabled people to get work? Even those who can are often limited to certain jobs. Plus they are more likely to be reliant on cars. I think they should get free parking.

BenjaminMParticipantTotally with MP1953 on this one for the very reason stated.
And Nen, if disabled people are working, that is even more of a reason why they should pay for parking. The blue badge concession is one of the most widely abused systems in existence and the sooner everyone pays or nobody pays the better it will be.

MP1953ParticipantHave you ever looked at the cars in the disabled areas, it is quite obvious there is no shortage of money, but of course they should still get priority parking not just in council car parks but everywhere and be allowed as they are now to park on double yellow lines as long as it is safe to do so if that makes it easier for them.
But free parking no, a lot of blue badge holders may well be better off financially than a lot of able bodied people, although as I have already stated on other threads I think there should be more free parking for everyone to attract people into the town.

zingerParticipantI agree with MP1953 & BenjaminM on this point. The various allowances given to disabled people should more than cover car park charges. 6 month temporary badges should be available for people who have had major surgery too.

CarolThomasParticipantFully agrees with designated parking as many disabled people fund walking difficult – as for free this should not be the case- a person with a disability us nit automatically without funds to pay the charge. There are a wide range f Benefits that someone can apply for under Universal Credits and if assessed to require financial support for finance then they will get this element.
AS far as new cars, many will be on the Motability Scheme.

AlunhParticipantThere are two issues in play here, accessibility and payment.
My priority for parking and the disabled would be to maximise accessibility and to that end I would expand the times that a disabled person can access Wrexham’s main streets. In Abergavenny, they have helped revitalise the Markets by increasing the number of dedicated parking places near or in the town’s centre. This has helped reinvigorate the Markets and the Independent shops.
The payment issue is much less important than ensuring that people who find it difficult accessing the shops (and similar) can do so conveniently. It may be that a greater access policy combined with car parking charges and meters could generate funds to help offset cuts. As mentioned, there are alternative methods of helping people who have both a disability and a limited income
