“Yesterday evening two votes took place, the first an amendment tabled by Labour’s Harriet Harman, which included the line stating the intent ‘declining to give a Second Reading to the Welfare Reform and Work Bill’, in effect stopping the bill. Labour MP’s were guided by their party to vote for this, which Mr Lucas did, however it was defeated 308 to 124 votes.”

    Wasn’t this 308 to 208 ?

The vote on the main bill was 308/124.

Obviously some of the 232 Labour members do not consider Welfare important enough to vote on.

    Cheers Rob

I think Mr Lucas’ lucid enough (but lengthy) explanation might just be too subtle. They’ve been painted as the moderate wing of the Tory party. Tough.

As comforting as Mr Lucas might find his assertion that the social media backlash was an orchestrated campaign, if you take out the odd tweet from rival political factions there’s still a fair few angry local constituents in there.

An MP’s job is to make decisions regarding legislation, if the Labour Party are against the Welfare Cuts they should all have voted against them.
