Daily Post didn’t bother with the actual data.

This has a look at the day / night, town centre, home and 2 miles from home data plus link to report.

Majority of 18 to 30 year olds and those aged over 61 feel “Very Safe” or “Safe” in town centre

Will the Leader and Daily Post do their own story on it now that is public, or have they actually stopped covering Wrexham Council now the LDR (more here) exists, that was promised as more eyes on things, not licence fee payers subsidising journo cuts in PLC’s and billion dollar megacorps.

Bear in mind the Daily Post publishers managed to send a reporter to the opening of a supermarket the other day… (!)

It’s ironic that people can diss the results of a survey involving 1300 people by supplying their own personal anecdotal experience. We can’t ignore the fact that in the 21st century no-one needs to visit their local town – why should they? The days when you had to go to the local High Street are over; now it is a choice and often a leisure time choice and consequently Wrexham is in a competition with other towns and out of town shopping centres for people’s custom and free time. I am not sure either how spending money in Poundland, QD and the likes is supporting the local economy, let alone national and international chains such as Primark, Starbucks, Caffi Nero, and McDonalds.

Wrexham town is shocking at the moment.Lord St,Regent St, the bus station & queens square are like no go areas, & that’s for the police as well. You never see them around there when all the undesirables are around.Come on Wrexham Police win the town centre back.

Those are no go areas – that’s hilarious! Better tell the several hundreds of regular people who venture through those locations every day without any bother that they ought not be there.

Ioan y Ffin, my “anecdote” was not a “diss” of the survey results, simply trying to add some perspective here as from many comments in these forums it’s clear people aren’t coming in to town as they think it’s invaded by “spiced up zombies” (their descriptions not mine). There’s clearly an undeniable problem in Wrexham with the town having the 2nd highest number of “homeless rough sleepers” in Wales but the negativity here from residents is so over hyped.

What you acknowledge is people like me and my family (and many others) don’t just visit the town to shop in high street budget shops/national chains but for leisure & pleasure. We certainly enjoyed listening to the local choirs sing at the singing streets festival. And how is having lunch in the Nightingale hospice shop cafe, buying handmade items off a stall in Ty Pawb, food and drink from local suppliers at the food festival not spending money on our local economy?! The town centre groups and the many small local businesses are putting a lot of effort in to improving the town’s reputation and dispelling a lot of myths and fears. It’s great to see so many more than the 1300 people surveyed supporting the town attending these events or just popping in to buy from our local businesses as well as the dwindling high street chains.

We may not “need” to visit town centres today but would you rather see our town centre destroyed and left to ruin?
