Something else which is infectious is WCBC wasting money, they just can’t seem to waste it quick enough.

I know Plas Madoc is losing money and the obvious thing is to close it down but I would like WCBC to answer a few questions honestly if they can:

    * When did it start losing such a large amount of money ?
    * Why was allowed to carry on and not addressed years ago ?
    * What are the real plans for the Plas Madoc site if/when it closes (honest answer) ? Don’t say there are no plans because that must be a lie.
    * Where is the £12 million coming from to build a new leisure centre ?
    * How will the new leisure centre make money when the existing 2 are losing money ?
    * What options have you considered in order to turn Plas Madoc around and at least make it break even or lose far less money ?

There are many more to be answered and I’m not sure we will ever get the facts.

All valid points, I stated in an earlier post I think both sites are marked for development, but if Plas madoc is losing money why did they refurb it, that probably cost a lot. Questions we will probably never know the answers to.

Now that the political shenanigans is over(for a while) it is time for everyone to start supporting those that are looking to set up a Leisure Trust– they have a massive uphill struggle but knowing some of the people they will be determined and not let the ‘system stop them.

Well we could start a thread on here, and do a community analysis together of the size of the market, volume of people that use the facility, tariff charged and revenue raised – and what income would look like. Do we know the breakdown costs to run the facility, the short to medium term repair and renewal commitments needed for the whole facility, and risks (outside the the normal day to day trading). What product (opening hours and stuff) do the customers want; what special facilities could be offered such as classes and to cross over with other community objectives eg minimising social isolation. Can value be added to objectives such as the development for the Olympics, and then start to use lottery or other funds to supplement the facility (building on an initial strong and viable business plan).

has it been decided that both water world and plas madoc will close, i assume that the pools in chirk and gwersyllt are in profit or breaking even. i have not heard if they are faced with closing.

If Waterworld is closed and not replaced the Council have a £1.2 million loan to repay to Sports Council.
Chirk and Gwersyllt are not breaking even just that their loss is ‘acceptable’ to the powers that be.
There are lots of things that need to be looked into with the cost models- let’s hope that if a Trust is formed they are able to unravel all the costs.

Congratulations to the Wrexham Swimming Team. They have a long history of success? Using the Sochi medals as a good example of the need and achievements to invest in good training facilities …does this inspire us as a community to look for answers to champion swimming and water sports and facilities in Wrexham.

If Waterworld is closed before a new facility is built we will probably lose our swimming club. Not all parents can afford the time to travel to other venues 5-7 days a week which is probably how often a lot of these youngsters train. They already need to travel if they need to practice in a 50 metre pool as some of the younger ones may need to before their first major galas. Wrexham Swimming Club is well in excess of 100 years old. Probably nearer to 120 without looking it up. We are lucky that coaches are willing to give their time to train these youngsters and we don’t recognise this enough.

Congratulation to the swimming club – massive achievement to all of the youngsters and their coaches. (not to mention dedicated parental ‘taxi’s!!’)
I wonder watch chance there would be to set something up in Plas Madoc — nothing like good old local competition.
Is there anyone out there that would start a club if the Leisure Centre is secured.

    Just some thoughts/questions
Why do leisure centres only have a 30yr life span? Surely the buildings are designed to last longer than 30yrs even pre fab garages last longer.
Wouldnt it be cheaper to put new plant in an existing building rather than pay to have a building demolished and build a new one?

Is there any way of finding out the name of consultants advising WMBC regarding Plas Madoc / Waterworld and also finding out if the same consultants advised Blaenau Gwent Council to close Nantyglo Sports Centre ?

Is information available whether WMBC pay any consultancy fees to Isotoro.co.uk ?

Has anybody queried the opinion of Wrexham Town Centre Manager Isobel Garner on the closure of Nantyglo given her role as an Education Commissioner at Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council ?
Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council – Commissioners

” In addition to working as Education Commissioner at Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, Isobel now has a portfolio career working as an Associate of Public Services through her company Isotoro Ltd where she advises and assists organisations committed to improving Public Services. “

Reading today on Wrexham.com that Plas Madoc Leisure Centre could be thrown a lifeline it struck me that given her expertise and experience it could be worth trying to gain the support of Isobel Garner to help save Plas Madoc from suffering the fate of Nantyglo.

Can we ask for the help, guidance and support from this highly valued local stalwart.
At least find out whether or not she supports trying to keep PMLC open ?

Her role as Town Centre Manager may have no remit regarding Waterworld etc but it must be worth having her support at the council given the testimonials on the Isotoro website.

“We owe you a debt of gratitude for the leading role you took in developing and leading the collaboration agenda including the promotion and delivery of local authority shared services and service integration across organisational boundaries.”

Chair of the North Wales Regional Leadership Board

“I’ve watched you tackle daunting problems with skill and determination. The secret of your success is daring to be different.”

    Chief Officer, Local Authority

“Your involvement, drive and enthusiasm for collaborative work has been instrumental in moving things forward, challenging pre-conceptions and opening minds.”

    Director of Education

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you and value your commitment to transparent and open communication. You don’t shy away from the difficult issues and are happy to work with us to tell the story as it is.”

    Communications Manager

“One of your greatest attributes is your ability to distil large quantities of information in order to identify the crux of any issue.”

Chief Officer, Wrexham County Borough Council
