Build another multi-storey (there’s already one there that very few people know about) at the hospital and it could be used during the day by staff and patients. On weekend nights it could quite easily be used as a parking area, with a park-and-ride service, for large events in the town.

I think it would make sense to have free parking in the council owned car parks. I know the council view the revenue generated by the car parks as essential and try and find ways to generate more by making more car parks chargeable or charging for disabled parkers etc…

However, they are looking at it the wrong way. Any perceived loss by making the car parks in the town centre free could be covered and exceeded in the medium to long term. There would be an upturn in footfall into town, in theory stimulating an increased level of spending and improved prospects for existing business and investment opportunities for new business ventures. Which would therefore generate an increased return in business rates.

The public owned car parks are already a flawed revenue generating system because they are competing directly with private car parks in town, which are more centrally located next to shops and can either undercut the public car parks if they want or can team up with shops to offer incentives such as free parking for a minimum spend in their shop (much like Iceland, Heron Foods etc… have done on Island Green).

The public car parks (such as Library Car Park, Waterworld, Ty Pawb Etc..) should provide a 3 hour limit of free parking during 9-5pm Mon-Fri and then have them free for unlimited periods of time on evenings and weekends.

I’ve worked in the Maelor but was never aware of any multi storey car park, this has been an issue for some time
as you can see from this link below.

When I say free, I do mean a managed free, for example at the Hospital it should be free, but you should need to take a ticket for say three hours and then renew it if you need to stay longer like it was when free parking was first introduced there, I don’t know why they have not implemented this which would stop the town workers parking there all day.

Again Matt is on the right lines with the town especially at Christmas free parking where people who work in the town park there all day and their usual parking places like Westminster Drive is empty! although I know they came up with something with free parking after 10 am last year.

It just needs thinking through a bit, if possible!

What I forgot to add, was all money collected could go towards hospital funds.

Isn’t the reason we pay tax and NI to fund the hospital?

The Council don’t have to make the Parking in their Car Parks completely free to help improve the town, merely make it STRATEGIC.

Prices were bumped up in the good times and now need looking at carefully. There seems to be a juggling act going on here, finding a Car Pricing policy which maximises on Parking Revenue yet does not destroy the town. Talk to a Councillor, and they will state that they can’t reduce the charges, talk to a Shop owner, and they will insist on free parking.

What we do know, however, is that the Car Parking within the town is not all being done by either Shoppers or Tourists (who often exercise choice depending on Cost). There are also Workers.

So…..reduce Car Parking Charges right across every short stay Car Park from 10.00am, if possible to zero. Put the prices up in the long stay Car Parks (and on anyone parking before 10.00am)…….plus open up more street spaces to Car Parking, plus place meters on them and Charge.

But why aren’t people who can influence these things looking at all these very good/sensible thought out suggestions ?
