Youth turnout has always been relatively low, even when you were young. So stop this typical anti-youth ranting.

Interested – Nope. Local politics is pretty much my extent. I like the potential in Welsh Politics though – that being said I’m neither the ‘right’ age, demographic, experience or temperament. I’m far too open to make a career out of politics sadly :)

Wrexview – couldn’t agree more. Alas, more needs to be done to make it more ‘relevant’ (perception at least… obviously it’s very relevant).

Slouth – can’t knock your point about pretty much perpetual low turnout.

A lot of disengagement has occurred with young people with the demise of Young Conservative, Young Labour, Socialist Labour Party etc. In the good old days of political engagement (showing my age now) when local debates took place these clubs (which in most instances were really a social club and not necessary about political views) at least kept young people engaged with political parties.
I wonder how many people remember the Young Conservatives Club down the back alley at the side of the Wynnstay Hotel in Wrexham- I’m sure not many of my contemporaries who went their became stanch Conservatives but they knew about the party.
Schools do very little in the way of engagement with politics — what is covered very often is in a historical context.
Even the Young People Senedd yr Ifanc in Wrexham is generally run by Local Authority staff who are not permitted to allow the young people to challenge anything that the Council are doing (or not doing) for young people in Wrexham– £500k from a £650k budget has just been cut and not one single voice of decent was heard from the Senedd yr Ifanc.
Politics for YP needs to be meaningful and at a level they can engage with freely and not controlled by an establishment that takes away their voice.
(Oh forgot aren’t Politicians, Local and National actually afraid of the voice of young people because they do not hold back and ask the questions many adults shy away from)

Thoroughly agree Dylan. Schools do very little on engaging over politics. Should be part of the curriculum and then maybe the voter age will be reduced.

I’ve missed that one Marvin – who’s suggested that??

I dealt with schools so much about 5 years ago – trying to get young people engaged and interested in politics. Sad really that the feedback I got from many schools pretty much equated to them not wanting to show a bias or preference.

I remember my own political education in High School (05-10) was during the run up to the 2010 election and we spoke about what each parties manifesto’s were roughly suggesting during 1 x 50 minute class. – Sad really!

Thank the lord I dropped out of Pure Maths A Levels during college, ended up wanting to switch to Psychology, ended up speaking to Neil Roberts who was the main politics tutor at the time and he convinced me that politics was a much better suit to myself. Now that man was an engaging personality, the entire class knew his bias to the left, but he taught and discussed topics neutrally – often ‘chairing’ debates about many of the largest political topics between the students. Fantastic way to spend an education!

Thanks for the heads up on the Marford candidate Marvin. He not only thinks Wrexham should have its own airport but that Councillors should be better paid. You have to ask whether he is on the wind up lol. I encourage all to read his introduction.

My favorite bit was him saying he’d move back to the area as soon as he’s elected. Reminds me of the UKIP candidate in 2015 who only stake to the county he was standing for (i think it was Liverpool (?)) was that he rented a pigeon shed.

    Conde.
We are talking about Charles Dodman who in 2012 stood as a UKIP candidate for the Garden Village Ward. In his pre election campaign he made reference to moving to live in the Ward area. Now 5 years later he still has not moved. He now says he will move when elected. You could not make it up.
