From today’s Scrutiny Meeting it seems that Wrexham resurface the roads using material with only a 10 year lifespan. The alternative is more expensive but has a 20 year life span. Surely labour costs are the major expense and even if the material is more expensive it must be more economic to do the job once in twenty years rather than twice. Also by having the 10 year lifespan material then all the roads in Wrexham will need resurfacing every 10 years!

There are parts of Wrexham, specially around Acton that are terrible to drive through. But, what they’re doing in the town centre beats all. The paving they are putting down looks damn awful already. If they’d simply tarmacked Regent street, Hope street, Henblas street and Queen street with the same tarmac as High street it would have taken half the time and half the cost and looked a sight better than it looks now. Who in their right mind ever decided on this deserves to be drawn and quartered for the waste of money and time and loss of revenue to all the businesses in town.

Totally agree, this pavement project in the town centre is nothing short of an absolute disgrace, the money wasted here could have been used so much wiser and the sad part is the same thing will happen again when they realise as to how awful the new look is

Have to say I couldn’t agree more.
As this council lurches from one crisis to another I was literally agog as I walked through town the other evening.
The cost of replacing what is obviously a perfectly serviceable surface is indeed mind boggling.
Who makes these diabolical decisions whilst we’re facing further cuts and stringent measures?
This council quite literally would fail to organise a pillow fight in a dormitory and is about as much use as Anne Frank’s drum kit!!

    Rant over.

When budgetary constraints are dealt with on a few years basis and elections are every 5 years. It is always in the interests of the current ruling executive to go for the cheapest option available and in this case the 10 year rather than 20 years. It’s incredibly short sighted and bad management, but when the roads start breaking down and need to be replaced in 10 years the ruling executive will point to the previous regime as being at fault for failing to spend sufficient money and causing greater costs down the line. To no accountability whatsoever – once you are out of office, nothing can be pinned on you. Likewise, blame will also be pointed to austerity and the WAG and the Westminster Government for going the cheap route.

When in Austerity and cuts mode – there is no political upside for them to future proof our roads or go above and beyond what is necessary.

They already aren’t doing enough as the roads haven’t been fully fixed since last winter – as the massive pothole in the Tesco roundabout continuously reminds me.
