DRParticipantPlans have been submitted to demolish the old Scott’s nightclub on Brook Street and build ‘modern’ student flats.
If successful accommodation for 107 students could be built on the site.
There’s quite a lot to read through, but there are some images of what the proposed build looks like on the Council website.
What do you think of the proposals?

Wrecsam_ladParticipantWork was stopped on this old building due to asbestos health scare in 2011, that will need to be cleaned up before any demolition.

zingerParticipantThere are hundreds of WCBC owned garages in the borough with asbestos roofs. What would be the situation there.

Don’t know about the garages, asbestos is Safe until it’s disturbed, the asbestos in Scotts was smashed up and the dust was everywhere. That will require a specialist team to clear up and at what cost, they just can’t demolish it with out clearing up the asbestos……. But it is Wrexham council…..

lazyjackParticipantThe first things I would like clarified are the potential cost of the project and over what period of time do Wrexham Council expect to get their money back. After all, this is a Council who are supposed to be trying to cut their spending.
To be honest I would prefer student accommodation to be located closer to the place of learning than the bars & clubs of the town centre.

AlunhParticipantI’m not sure why the idea of Wrexham Council picking up a cost tab for the Scott’s scenario has crept into this discussion. Isn’t this just a landlord responsibility situation and the debate about the desirability of flats (or not), the destruction of a historic building (or not) ?

Perhaps I’ve just misunderstood, so I presume this (other than the planning application process) does not have anything to do with the council ? Fair enough then, I was wandering where they found the amount of money this project will cost !

DRParticipantThe proposal has been put forward by Matthew Jones Architects.
This is the link their site, hasn’t got an image of the proposals for Wrexham, but gives a vague idea of their style of design and building: RIBA Architect North Wales | Conwy | Anglesey | Gwynedd | Denbighshire | Matthew Jones

LiamParticipantMatthew Jones are the agents not the applicants. Applicants part of the application has been redacted, which seems to be commonplace.
