The Post Office itself is under threat as the sub-offices now basing themselves in convenience stores extend their services and their opening hours. The one based in the Spar on Rhosddu Rd is now open from 07.00 till 22.00.

The Post Office network has always consisted of Crown (managed direct by PO) and sub Post Offices that are run either by self-employed people or private companies. The move away from Crown offices commenced over 20 years ago. The sub post offices are reacting to market demand and normally integral to a bigger business.
If we still want to have a town centre Post Office this will only exist in a business such as Smiths or CoOp. I think we should fully support this move. The service quality and services should improve.

[quote quote=112272]Car parking is surely only a small element. Even if it is free if the retail and environmental elements aren’t up to what potential customers or visitors seek they will go elsewhere.will leave it to readers to make their judgement on these two points.

I dunno so much doesn’t the footfall go up dramatically when there is free parking, agree it’s not entirely down to that, but if someone wants to pop into to town for the odd thing they probably won’t bother if there is a charge to park especially at EM

Don’t forget we have a town centre post office on Town Hill that has level access and limited parking outside.

This move was originally proposed about 8 years ago when Victoria Road Post Office closed.

People need to reflect on what you get from a Post Office that you cant get somewhere else-
Postage Stamps available in 1000’s of outlets
Car Tax more people now using online so limited amount are done over the counter
Benefit and pension payments are all done using a card – access is available in most banks and hole in the wall machines
Extended hours — longer in Sub Post Offices
Passport checking — also at a number of Sub Post Offices
Foreign currency — banks and supermarkets

There is nothing that is not available elsewhere so not sure why some people are trying to be precious about Henblas Street– Ian Lucas is referring to the impact on the rest of Henblas Street but that is not an issue for the Post Office as they are quite rightly only interested in having a profitable outlet as they are not a subsidised Social Service.

The only objection I have to the proposal to move to W H Smiths is that it is to be on the first floor- this is what people should be objecting to not the move itself. This is not just an issue for disabled people but any one who may have a child in a buggy as well.

Post Offices perform an invaluable service in out of the way villages. They are the hub of a community. The first point of call for a delivery driver who can’t find a property to deliver a parcel. A whole area can share a postcode.

You seem to miss the point on this one Dylan. Shoppers will shop where it is convenient and cheap to park. Once you make it inconvenient and expensive, the shoppers evaporate. This means that the businesses have a reduced foot-flow and their business will spiral downhill. You then get the businesses that your Parking policies (and other policies) merit. Every national Report that has been commissioned says the same. This is not anecdotal stuff!!

I take part of your point but as human beings we are programmed to pay more depending on the quality of the overall experience- why do people pay £5 plus for cities like Chester, Liverpool and Manchester if it is not because the offer and overall experience is heightened.
Another example of humans paying more than is necessary is the upsurge in coffee shops charging £2 plus for a small coffee when a shopper could easily pick one up for a £1 or less or office workers make one for 20p- why do office workers pay these prices research shows it is because of the branded experience and a ‘perceived’ quality product when in fact many people would probably not be able to identify the difference between a Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Costa or the £1 sandwich and pie shop coffee in Queens Street.
