Correct. And a whopping £10.6m (5% of the total prison budget) has been committed in this “local” area. If they have the data on where money is being spent I wonder why they haven’t disclosed how much is being spent within Wrexham county?
Interesting quote from the North Wales Police chief in The Leader, which reaffirms the biggest fear for many people when it was first announced..
“In terms of its impact on us, we are alive to the fact a rehabilitative prison could cause issues.
“Inmates who are released could seek to settle in Wrexham and there are other issues which could have an effect on us with the security of the prison…”

Pretty sure if the prison was going to be in Shrewsbury, they would never in a thousand years have an open day in WrexhamDecember 29, 2015 at 7:57 pm #105312
wrexviewParticipantAt the planning and pre planning stage no Officer or Councillor of Wrexham Council asked about the implications for our Social Services and Housing of the Prison. The Prison will house over 2000 people on a rolling programme, some will choose to remain in the area on release. Once released the prison authorities relinquish all responsibility.

AdamParticipantFrom a 2012 Ministry of Justice survey, 37% of prisoners stated they would need help to find accommodation when they are released.
Shelter UK has some useful advice though:
“Time spent in prison in an area does not give you a local connection with the area the prison is in. However, if you have no local connection with any area or if you are fleeing domestic violence, you can apply to the council in any area. The council you apply to has to help you.”
No doubt the executive board had a good read of the recent Care Act before making the final decision:
“What does the Care Act do?
The Care Act makes clear where the
responsibility lies for assessing the care and support needs of prisoners and people in approved premises, and providing care and support where those needs meet eligibility criteria. The Act states that it will be the Local Authority where the prison or approved premises is located which is responsible. This means assessing whether someone has care and support needs and what those needs may be. After the assessment, the local authority must then determine whether the person is eligible for care and support using the same eligibility framework used for people living in
the community. If they are assessed as having needs that meet the eligibility criteria, the Local Authority will meet those needs.”January 12, 2016 at 4:54 pm #105885
ben10Participantits like every major project in wrexham, they insist on propping up every counties economy except there own, so the vast majority of the money will go out of town, plus a lot of the jobs will be filled from other areas, i know people from liverpool, manchester and london have all applied via internal applications
You only need to look at the amount of companies working on the councils housing stock, nearly all are from other areas, why would this project be any different, and they wonder why the high street has a lot of empty shops, maybe if more of the money stayed in wrexham the locals may just spend it on the high street.January 13, 2016 at 8:39 am #105940
SheefagParticipantLet me assuage your concerns, there’ll be plenty of uniformed locals in that prison, one way or another.
What you’re complaining about is called mobility of labour Ben.
What’s stopping you from applying for a job in Liverpool, Manchester or London?January 15, 2016 at 1:43 pm #106057

I think you will find that the vast majority of inmates will come from over the border (ridiculous to think that north Wales needs a super prison holding 2000+ inmates.) And no doubt a lot of them when released will be encouraged to settle in the area creating ever more social problems.
As for your “mobility of labour” comment it may well be true but it doesn’t alter the truth of Ben’s point about local jobs.
