Welsh DresserParticipantI didn’t always agree with her politics but as a woman I admired her. She was the first woman to hold the post of Prime Minister and she had to be tough. She never wavered and proved that women can hold a top office post and still be a wife and mother. Not bad for a grocer’s daughter.

AlunhParticipantBrilliant Prime Minister. The most difficult task for any Prime Minister is to manage change when the back cloth is difficult. In her case she straddled the era between the old industries declining and the new industries rising. It seems odd that people prefer to roll out this simple nonsense about Thatcher killing off the Coal industry, for example, than to deal with the facts. The facts, of course, relate to the rise of Gas and Electric fires, Central heating, the availability in the EEC of cheap coal, and so on.
Recent surveys have shown that per capita incomes have doubled since the 1970’s in Britain, much of this fact due to the transformation of the country

Welsh DresserParticipantEven after all this time Margaret Thatcher invokes some strong reaction. Some of the comments I have read about her death in the media and social networks have been really nasty. Male politicians make decisions just as bad as any of Thatchers but they don’t seem to attract the same level of hatred. Is it because she was a strong willed woman? Any party leader needs to be strong but in Thatchers case it seems she was viewed as cold and heartless because of her strength.
Her children have lost their mother and that hurts no matter what age the children are.

Could you please justify this point, and if you don’t mind give an example.

I sort of understand the view about sexism towards politicians, the universal description of hate towards her today has been ‘witch’ which is gender specific and the more positive name has been “Iron lady”.
Whereas when blair goes it will be not be influenced as much by gender e.g. either bliar or b’stard
Cameron’s nickname is even more interesting, as although the insults can be labelled to either male or female, the words themselves refer to female genitalia. Tory t**t or c**t.
But interestingly neither May, Harman nor Cooper the top females in national politics get worse names than the current crop of male politicians.
On the whole, I do think there is sexism in politics whether it be at local level (the lack of women in the local council is very worrying) or national level. The labour party for me does actually seem worse at the moment, e.g. Cooper and her husband Ed Balls. Cooper is by the far the better and more able politician, however, the alpha male, balls has taken the higher placed job and profile.
caveat: However in general, I think right wing politicians get worse names than left wing politicians and thatcher being female got it even worse.
2nd caveat: Thatcher of course used her gender to set herself from the others in her party, so in some part she is to blame.
