Not seen it mentioned on here but anyone have any thoughts on data published saying that if HS2 goes ahead Wrexham will benefit by a +£17-£19million boost?

KPMG has done a study that initially was used to show the benefits, but has now been published showing all data including the negatives.

    Data says…
Ref Name Low High Low High
    Wrexham 17.91 19.66 0.8% 0.9%

First two numbers are ‘Output Change (£millions, 2013 prices) and second two are ‘As a proportion of GDP’.

As with many reports like this, you have to be careful.

If every imaginable aspect of the exercise was factored in, then it would be a really beneficial exercise. This is, of course, impossible. For example, the project will eventually require that the Tax paying fraternity cough up to cover the billions required to fund. One would have to try and evaluate the alternative uses that these billions could have been put to to really appreciate the gains. For example, let’s pretend that Enterprise zones were established with no Rates, no Vat, etc.

If the project does go ahead, however, it does at least show some positives for some areas, ours included

All those millions so a few people can get somewhere a bit quicker? Madness. There are better ways to spend the money.

Electrification springs to mind, only 50yrs behind the UK’s southern regions.

1.Electrification plays a role in reducing carbon emissions as well as improving air quality and reducing noise – electric vehicles, on average, emit 20% – 30% fewer CO2 emissions than diesel

    2. Electric trains provide more seats than diesel trains, while electric freight locomotives can haul longer trains

HS2 will be built and we will still be making use of 1960’s technology….Whats our MP’s view?

Maybe so. But that still ignores the fact that North Wales and Wales in general has a dire transport infrastructure and would some of this money be better spent improving that?
