well, at least this is one place that the subject will get a public airing. If its right, the National Assembly for Wales costs £42m a year to run for the whole of Wales, and the Democratic Services (assuming this is the equivalent) in North Wales is £49m a year . . .

have you asked for breakdown of democratic services costs? stop assuming and find out.

Democracy is the most important freedom an individual town, city, county, region or country can have.

Having made some phone calls, and started to write some letters, its becoming obvious that we have too many politicians, and that costs have grossly increased decade after decade. We have hundreds of councillors in North Wales, and Assembly Members with wide ranging powers. Costs for public services and democracy are flying upwards, the community should be debating these, it sounds as if a lot of information is in the public domain, but little is being done about it . . .

Having spoken with people across the community on this one, there is a real spread of opinion about local rights, vs North Wales, vs Wales.

In the face of it, the Assembly costs £42m per annum, and the structures of elected officials across North Wales £49m.

Change in how we run the six counties of North Wales, and services such as education and health, should surely put money and resources back to the front line.

we don’t have enough politicians (as we should be the politicians that vote on every issue not the councillors) but we do have too many polictians who are in it for their own personal game… e.g. the exec committee on the wrexham council.

There isn’t enough democracy in wrexham and I would fight to the hilt if somebody tried for it to be reduced even further.

Bluntly: stop suggesting trying to take away freedoms.

I may come across as a dunce in this respect but I am having a hard time following this thread. I have just re-read it from the beginning and am still no nearer understanding. Is it the budget that’s the issue or the way it is distributed?

The way it is distributed and used.

Then we would ask why has the money been raised in the first place, and in future, could it be spent better and differently.

The question about why the money has been raised in the first place is a very easy answer: to make wrexham a better place and to keep it that way.

How it is distributed and used is the crux? Currently it is being poorly distributed and used, because the councillors are only interested in keeping their positions and nest eggs.

But if you have problem, you have to have the guts to stand up and say, i think this wrong and I’m going to do something about it.

If the current Council is considered to be not effective, and that the same introspective debate has gone on for far too long, then working out how the whole of the County should operate in the future is a good way forward?

Some of the money that the Council spends, and the work that it does, could be better grouped with other organisations?

    that’s undemocratic and thus wrong.

What is the definition of democracy?

Does it go something like: To be fairly and equally represented, to promote the well-being and happiness of mankind, to enable society to develop to the advantage of all its people.
