The Wrexham Leader reported on Friday about the Homeless situation in Wrexham after there had been a count over two weeks 2nd and 15th November there were a total of 31. This is a very sad indictment on society that anyone is in this position in this day and age- no doubt many will have mental health or drug/drink related habits.
It is a pity however when CXlr Paul Pemberton makes a statement that we will help out own but those from outside the area need to go back and some of those helping need to move out of Wrexham- is this really the way we want to treat people in trouble by checking their identify and if they are not from Wrexham heard them to the border and send them to Chester or Oswestry. They are human beings who have needs and support but I hope this type of view is not the ‘official’ stance of Wrexham Council– if it is then everyone better watch out if you cant prove a Wrexham parentage.

The reason for intolerance towards the homeless is possibly found in this article today.

The point that was being made has been misunderstood the thoughts of many people In Wrexham is that there are a great number of agencies which have been set up in the town which other areas don’t have as a result Wrexham is becoming a honey pot for the homeless and many people would like it to be shared out more to other towns I believe no malice intended and as it stands no one is being turned away

Homelessness doesn’t just mean out on the streets though and there are far more people homeless, but sofa surfing or living in sheds. I bet the council hasn’t counted these in its figures. If we listened to all the figures, all homelessness would seem a lot better than the real truth! It’s appalling that people are sleeping on cardboard in 2016.

One of the issues is that if the Council actually admitted the size of the issue they would then need to provide services for a number of the people who are ‘homeless’.
The Council view of people coming to Wrexham because there are so many services available just does not ring true- the Council provide a 16 bed unit on Hold Road- and that is it.
If you are walking around at night looking for a place to sleep and not in a doorway you are not counted!
Are there places in Wrexham that the Council wont look in case they find too many people?
There are clearly lots of reasons why someone may end up homeless but adopting a ‘out of sight out of mind’ attitude to try and reflect Wrexham as a town without problems is the worst form of denial and only helps to fuel the issues.
