If it was England then it would probably become one of the new Free Schools.

And wouldn’t that be a positive step

If the building is expensive to upkeep and is not needed for education purposes then why not let it go?

That’s where the Covenant bites in. That said, there might be a case to allow the site to revert if it is Covenanted. At present, the site is a white elephant and it is only the tantalising thought that it could provide some advantage to the Community that stands between retaining and retroceding

The funding for a Community based education centre would be a major issue. It’s a big building for something like the Yum Yum project. It could be split of course but would it still be classed as education. Without knowing what the covernant stipulates it’s hard to know.

I suspect that there would be a huge outcry if the old building were demolished.

What are the options with Glyndwr University? They are expanding and growing the faculties. Do they have any sports sciences? Engineering is one faculty, that area is forecast to grow in required numbers for the next 30 years, its not far from the main campus? Is art another subject area?

Glyndwr Uni Art dept is in the old hospital that used to be the art college.

On that subject, it might be a question of someone trying to shuffle the pack to place education where a building is covenanted and offload where it is not

Good point Alunh. There must be sites that are costing Glyndwr so it would make sense to move them around if possible.

I don’t know the answer, but if we could find a theme for Wrexham for the next century, eg adaptation of a market and/or industrial town (albeit this is a poor example), and we can populate it with economic activity, and at the core of that activity is education, we could hopefully grow Glyndwr Univeristy.

Part of the discussion in another forum is about needing a skilled workforce to enable inward investment and retain employers. Glyndwr make a substantial contribution to skills through engineering and other subjects, naming Airbus Broughton as one example.

The “swapping” of The Groves site that is covenanted, with another site is a clever and excellent idea, just need to make sure one of the sites doesn’t get taken advantage of.

Parachute this into an Integrated Plan, so that Wrexham as a community is seeking one vision, and the same set of values, and we’re away.
