Several people have tried and failed to make the Golden Groves work as a sustainable business and like many public houses this one looks like it will be demolished. It might well be it was the concept of “a 13th Century Drovers Inn ” being portrayed rather than an actual 13th Century Drovers Inn. Most old buildings in this area are well documented, and this one doesn’t seem to appear.

It certainly gave the impression of being very old when I was last there. I expect that when they demolish it they will find evidence of its age much too late. A shame that a beautiful old building will be lost to the area but there are no answers that I can think of. It was perceived to be ancient in the 1800’s I believe.

I suppose someone like CADW could Carbon Date some of the wood in the building. That might indicate if it is really old.

Ask Nev Dickens, He’s an expert on the merit or otherwise of old buildings.

Its always a shame to see old buildings disappear. The Golden Groves is undoubtedly old, but if it is unviable as a pub/restaurant it is difficult to see of what use could be made of the building. If development is refused the danger is that it would be left to rot away which would be a lot worse. What it needs is an owner who is wealthy enough to run it as a hobby!!

It will be an absolute disaster if a specific area of this historical 13th Century coaching-house is demolished.
To put things in to perspective, many of us have visited similar buildings from this period and seen exposed ‘Wattle and Daub’ protected by glass/plastic protection etc. The area of importance is undisturbed. We don’t know what is hidden from view. There could be anything. People concealed their wealth during the purges, and often died young due to ‘consumption’ and treasures were lost etc If you reached 35-years of age, you were remarkable.
The unknowing visitor to this marked coaching-house may be forgiven for knowing exactly where the oldest part of the building was. They probably walked through the main entrance, blinked an eye, and missed it. A small alcove, low-beamed ceiling with undisturbed walls.
Incredibly, the building has been overlooked by CADW and the local authority. Hopefully, a successful compromise can be reached with the impending planning application? Incorporate the area of importance withing a new development even?? Surely that can’t be difficult today?
CADW could list the building and halt proceedings swiftly. There’s just one problem. The property is secure. They need evidence. Pictures etc

Surely a small area can be preserved? A compromise reached??

This small area is so important. Intact. No-one knows what’s hidden in the walls. The very fact that the walls are intact reason preservation.

The picture above shows the area of great historical importance.
Incredibly, CADW have overlooked this site. Unbelievable really. To demolish this site of historical importance for 2 new houses will be a TRAGEDY. Surely the area can be a feature of any development even? You wouldn’t bulldoze Rossett Mill which is 300-years older and build 2 5-bedroom houses on it?

Someone has to advise CADW about the building. Then they need a consultation period. I don’t think that they just list things. Evidence is needed. The newspaper article from 1800’s would count towards it. Ongoing, another usage would need to be found for it too I believe. We will have nothing left of significance the way things are going.

When the owner extended the caravan park in Llay they dug up a protected settlement area/fort listed by CADW but the council did nothing to stop this from happening. Money talks I’m afraid and listing somehow has disappeared from the CADW site.
