It’s a bit early in the day, but the previous political make-up meant there was at least some opposition to decisions like Plas Madoc. Wasn’t overly impressed by the standard of opposition last night. Lots of abstaining and rambling.

Already had an email in about it – and spotted possibly the same Dylan that is on here as on twitter mentioning the vote change, with one being:

Leader 34 for, no against, 11 abstentions
Deputy Leader 36 for, no against, 11 abstentions

    One has to be wrong…!

Just realised there’s another possibility to this as council is standing by the voting record: councillors not voting. Remember this happening on another previous appointment of leader/deputy leader.

As we are told it is TOO LATE to consult the publis-who after all vote for us here goes.

What facts do you need to make a decision?
    Any views from Flintshire?
What are your concerns about the merger, or indeed Wrexham standing alone?
Will it help or hinder the representation county, town or community councillors give to you?

Yes the public do vote for you to look after their interests.Cllr Rogers reference 33.22 Agenda item 9 on the streaming states,he hopes that all councillors take the time to read the Invitation to Principal Authorities in Wales to submit their proposals for voluntary mergers.Less than 10 minutes later those Councillors who have not read the report have unanimously voted, to not consult on a merger. Is this what we elect them for,to vote blind?
All the facts have not been discussed or as yet, not all are known.I would have thought that rather than turn the invitation down,at least keep an open view to see if there is anything more in the future of a merger that could benefit Wrexham.
If Wrexham does stand alone, can the Welsh Government overturn that decision and merge Wrexham and Flintshire?
If it is found in the future that the merger of any other two Councils has produced a significant saving, then would Wrexham then be told you will have less money allocated than last year,as other Councils are doing better?

Unless two Councillors joined the meeting late , then the votes for the Leader and Deputy were miscounted. Perhaps in future two separate people should count and compare numbers . Also a head count should be taken before the meeting begins so that the total number of Councillors present is noted so that votes tally with those present. This was probably the only thing that was truly live on the night, the rest was predetermined !

Council have tweeted to say :

“No particular reason. Could be two members arrived between votes, or two simply didn’t vote in the first vote and didn’t abstain.”

Is not voting abstaining, or do you abstain from an abstention, if so is that counted as a vote ?

According to the ONS (Office National Statistics) data, the area has seen a decline in its economic index (performance) nationally UK by 14 points from 1997 to 2011. It indexed at near 100 (national average) and is now about 86.

Economic output pays for, or contributes, to spending in a county one way or another. Occupancy levels of businesses have declined significantly, and while some public services may have been secured for the area, it is trade and business that produces the primary monetary receipts – puts real money into the economy. All this enhances recreation, education, and job prospects and earnings.

Wrexham competes with everyone in a reasonable travel time of an hour, which could include Manchester. It includes Cheshire, Liverpool, North Wales and Shropshire. For corporations, sites for business in Wrexham can be competing globally, or in Europe, or even regionally where advantages such as Assisted Area Status (grants) offer a better opportunity for business.

People and companies are attracted to, and stay in areas, subject to the performance of local services such as the roads, hospitals, schools, and the provision of recreation, and impact of crime.

If the community of Wrexham is to be able to compete on the regional stage of Wales and England, and further afield, it must have cost effective public services, and provide progressive jobs with good earnings and a stable policy environment. In Britain, small growing indigenous businesses are central to each local successful economy.

A larger county will potentially take out substantial costs, and rather than the debate in a smaller council focus on the smaller issues, would enable professionals to run reasonable sized departments eg education, and highways, and councillors to have more meaningful input into a larger community area, and importantly to the county’s future on a regional and national basis.

Hi Guys first time post but have read with interest the discussions on the forum.

I watched the webcast and as like other posters was disappointed with the level of debate. I also think the stance by the new Leader on the possible merger disappointing. I think Dylan touched on the fact there has been no debate and as far as I’m aware no vote. So my question is how can he and Neil Rogers state that the council voted overwhelmingly against any merger??

I think more information is required especially in the public arena before anything can be discounted.

Tweet by WCBC @wrexham No particular reason. Could be two members arrived between votes, or two simply didn’t vote in the first vote and didn’t abstain.

Surely by not voting you are by definition abstaining?

Seems unusual that you have to vote to abstain.
