Quite agree with this. The object of the exercise is to ensure that the child is best protected and the school has to be the arbiter of this on matters of attendance. Some parents will drive a coach and horses through a lax system and the idea that a parent should formally request time off seems very sensible. Obviously there will be awkward schools just as there are awkward parents and both should be taken to task.
The idea that a teacher might, in exceptional circumstances, ask for leave seems a complete red herring to me. Exceptional leave and exceptional circumstances should be the basis of any human employer-employee relationship especially where there are matters of grief and domestic difficulty to deal with (that may not generate a doctor’s note).
