There’s a report going to the Council Scrutiny on Wednesday on the Communities First programme that the Council manage in Caia Park and Plas Madoc and other villages.

There is so much red on this report you would need a new printer cartridge if you printed it.

This is nothing short of a disgrace with so much Public funding being used into areas that have had £1millions over the years.

There is so little being achieved the Welsh Government should be in asking questions about what is happening (or not). The Council who mange these schemes need to ask what is going on — if a school had an inspection report as bad as this they would be in Special Measures

Once again, derogatory comments about something that Dylan hasn’t bothered to read fully before passing yet more cynical comment.
You fail to mention the significant ‘green’ ratings shown in the appendices but rather focus on a colour that fits nicely with your (self proclaimed) cynicism.
If you read the document, you will see the qualifiers that give rise to the ratings.
And as you see fit to condemn the report, would you be so kind as to inform readers of this forum what ‘RAG’ is a pneumonic for so we can all decide whether your interpretation is a valid one? Obviously, you do know, don’t you?

More than happy to oblige– Red is falling below target with no immediate likelihood of change, Amber is marginally on target with slow progress and green is on target.
If you put this report into the context of how many years these areas have had funding pumped into them and still little change — in some instances they are worse results than 5 years ago. With schemes such as these it may be better to give all the families vouchers for a variety of support and let them determine their own destiny. If they want training they can use the vouchers for courses, if they want transport the same etc. Sustainable success is achieved by empowering people to take control not to have things done for them. There is enough research in places like Toxteh and Brixton to see the changes that can take place.
Schemes that perpetuate the roles of ‘professionals’ in communities rather than the residents very rarely achieve success. People within communities help themselves if given the chance they do not need £100ks spent they need to take control.
As far as being a cynic I do know a number of people from both of these areas who have pulled themselves up from being in a bad place in their lives- most have done this through personal determination.
In Caia Park -the Partnership they are doing fantastic work in creating training and jobs but with hardly any funding from Communities First because they are operating Social Enterprises and going out looking for earned income. There services could easily be funded through the direct voucher scheme.
I will leave it to the Forum readers to judge whether my interpretation of the report is harsh or realistic.
