The Council have enlisted Team Tourism to look at what Wrexham offers to tourists and how these landmarks and or services can be optimised.

They’ve just published a draft report here

What do people think? Should Wrexham be considered a tourist destination? Is this a useful study?

Interesting. One small idea to attract passing trade, that brings money into the local economy. Facilities for passing motorhomes, similar to the “Aires” network in France. Normally located close to the town or area of interest. The aqueduct is an obvious draw. With a Park n Ride into the town etc. The Aires sites normally have barrier control, electric hook up, waste disposal etc. You have a limited time to stay.

The Caravan and M/home community have a huge and well maintained communication network. Visitors will quickly beat a path if whats on offer is fairly priced and well managed. We have a main arterial road from Ireland – Anglesey etc. Our town and local area is an obvious stopover point. Reports are great, action is the key.

Some interesting thoughts and I think many people will have overlooked these types of communities (who tend to talk to each other!!). More welcoming & plentiful facilities are bound to encourage positive word of mouth.

Couldn’t agree more on your last sentence!!

This weekend there has been an open day at Wrexham Football Club , a live History event at Bersham Heritage Centre and a Victorian themed weekend at Erddig. Joint promotion of such events happening over a week-end could encourage more visitors to Wrexham.

It would be interesting to know if there was cross promotion of those events, or any promotion of them to visitors!

On the 483 by Oswestry there seems to be loads of the brown Tourist Information signs, loads more than when you aproach Wrexham. If you think about it there is not a lot to draw in passing tourists. I don’t think that the aqueduct, a world heritage site is even signposted of the bypass.
