Does anyone know if Flintshire’s councillors have to pay to park as their staff have to now pay for parking in the tired car park by the great white palace.

From the Theatre Clwyd web site it says-

    Parking
There is a large undercover car park operated by Flintshire County Council at the front of the building with tunnel access direct to the theatre foyer. The tunnel entrance has steps so is not suitable for those with access needs. Please be aware that the outside part of the multi-storey car park is currently undergoing some works and therefore is unavailable for parking. Whilst these repair works are ongoing if you do find the covered part of the car park to be full please park in the adjacent tiered car park.

Recently the council has introduced charges to use the car park however it is only 50p for a full day, 20p for 2 hours and is pay and display Monday to Saturday from 8am to 5pm.

Why spoil a good thing WCBC?

I didn’t like this either “Councillors still wishing to park in the town centre could offset the new cost via their recent £200 pay rise, the equivalent of well over two months parking in the Waterworld carpark.”

Car Parking sorted now what about travel expenses: some Local Authorities regard a Councillors place of work as being their home and therefore they claim travel expenses at 45p a mile– does anyone know if Wrexham pays travel from home to Guildhall..

The following is on the Council website for 2016/17 which does not show many travel expenses claims but that does not mean they have not been aid as they could be coded under another heading.

This is an example of an expenses claims for another LA.
“27. For the purposes of calculating claims, a councillor’s normal place of residence (his/her
home) is regarded as his or her normal place of work, so expenses associated with
travel from home to the council headquarters, and other locations to conduct council
business, may be claimed back. Where a councillor travels on council business from
his or her employment or business (which is not council related) he or she may be
reimbursed for the cost of the journey. However, if the cost of making this journey
would have been lower had it started from the councillor’s home, then that lower cost is
the maximum amount which should be reimbursed. For example if the distance from a
councillor’s home to council offices is 5 miles and from a councillor’s business to
council offices is 10 miles, a maximum of 5 miles may be reimbursed. “

Going back to https://www.wrexham.com/news/which-councillor-claimed-1-35-mileage-to-attend-remembrance-day-service-99364.html etc it appears WCBC do allow travel expenses from home to guildhall for meetings.

I have often stated that Councillors should have access to Pool cars and that would sort both mileage claims and parking.

And where are those Pool Cars going to come from ? Who’s going to pay for them ?

It has to be said on this occasion fair play that they have decided to actually listen to the public for once and followed through on something.

In my mind though the entire situation could have been avoided had they not messed about with disabled parking. That was what got the public’s goat. So if they’d have had the foresight to leave that alone then I very much doubt the average person on the street would have given 2 hoots about free parking for council workers – it had been going on for years and nobody had raised an eyebrow. So it’s just one of those things. Ultimately charging all users for council-owned parking has earmarked additional revenue generations to go into the public coffers, so let’s hope it all goes to good use.

There has to be a town ecosystem that works for everyone or it becomes a big fight over who is entitled to what.

It is not so much about making Councillors pay but more about opening up the Guildhall car park to the public seven days a week. By doing this they will generate extra income. Councillors can park in any car park where there is a space and by doing so they will better understand the problem of limited dwell time in some of them. There maybe another effect , shorter meetings, as Councillors will be clock watching making sure they don’t over stay !
