Coleg Cambria – the new college for North East Wales following the merger of Deeside College and Yale College

New name for Yale as they merger with Deeside College on the 1st of August. Wonder how this will work out staffing wise and more importantly for the pupil’s education, is this just another cost cutting measure disguised as a new wonderful development:rolleyes:

This is a really difficult one. I wrote in to the paper in support and I remain in support- in principle.

I looked at Yale’s offer prior to the merger and, if you check, for example, the part time ‘A’ level offer, it has been poor compared to Llandrillo. No Maths, no Social Sciences and very little else for those who want to add value to their academic CV in their own time. I think of someone within my family who wanted to do Maths ‘A’ level at night- and can’t.

For many years, Yale has been financially challenged and you may be aware of their ‘pullout’ from the Groves site acquisition years ago and a clearout of top management, again a few years ago.

There will be clear economies of scale derived by this and , yes, there will be diseconomies. I’m sure that they won’t retain 2 sets of HR or Admin and it may be that certain subjects will be offered in 1 site and not the other. Hopefully, it will be the students who will be advantaged and whilst jobs will no doubt go (in the short term), these things have a habit of working in cycles

The only aspect I’m really disappointed about is the loss of the name. Thought it was unique and highlighted an important figure in the town’s history. Shame to lose that identity.

The structure that the college has arrived at, will have been shaped over recent years. However, the market has moved on, and the real question is: does or will the college provide subjects and substance that will meet todays and tomorrows jobs, properly equipping people and attractive to employers.

Totally agree with Liam regarding the loss of the Yale name. Many visitors to Wrexham specifically go to visit the grave Elihu Yale and there is a replica of the Wrexham Church Tower on the Yale campus in Connecticut USA. How fitting it was to have a college in Wrexham named Yale.

Quite agree with you here. Extrapolating from what has occurred and guessing on this one, I suspect that this is partly to do with not wishing to appear as if one college is taking over another and it could be something more legalistic.

You might recall that there was a dispute over the use of legally settled trade names with a well known College from across the pond. I think (and emphasise think) that the working settlement between the two Institutions was to modify the Wrexham College’s name so that Wrexham had to be in the name. Now here’s a potential problem. Would the process have to recommence and negotiations have to take place if some other configuration occurred

It is right to address the name, and can we solve this by calling Wrexham ‘Yale Campus’ thereby retaining & preserving the brand.

But surely, the real debate is how well we train the people of tomorrow in the right skills (i.e. emerging & potential markets, not the ones that have died or have no value), and to the right standard that puts them head & shoulders above other candidates in the employment market.

    Both sentiments are spot on

Genuinely interesting seeing what you have highlighted here.
I was the Student Governor from Yale College who attended these meetings during the final stages of the merger process.

I think that the loss of the Yale name is a shame – this was highlighted by myself and many other students I spoke to.
However, it’s important we recognise the new institution. Which is why I fully endorse calling the Grove Park Campus, the Yale Campus. (Something I’m sure will remain irregardless, just like Glyndwr University is still NEWI to a lot of the Wrexham population).

In terms of teaching potential, I think this merger is a fantastic opportunity for the FE Sector in North East Wales. It shows a true amalgamation of distinctly different institutions with the same goal in mind – doing the best for the students.

    The facts are as follows:
This merger will create one of the biggest colleges in the UK, both in terms of catchment area and student population.
Both institutions have experts in their respective fields – and now we can share this expertise in a much more efficient way, I’m looking forward to seeing serious development of the FE sector.

I have complete confidence in the new management structure, David Jones ( Principle ) is a fantastic gentleman. He definitely has the right goals in mind to get the best out of the students.
Jasbir Dhesi (Vice-Principle) is also a very conscientious man who I know is particularly well thought of by the staff and students at the Yale Campus. He gave a lot of his time to communicating with students and this definitely showed in the respect given to him.

Do you by any chance have the subjects / curriculum structure, the numbers of students that will be taught, the performance levels they’re aspiring to, catchment area, and any jobs and earning aspirations afterwards … also colleges tend to lean towards certain specialist fields, is this the case here, and how will students seeking other subject areas get tuition

Sounds a lot, but being involved in the process, this might be to hand?
