For a business like Iceland to make money on each customer visit they need to have trolley shoppers rather than basket shoppers to ensure the spend per visit is quite high. Trolley shoppers need access to car parking so it makes sense to have free car parking and probably affordable on a minimum spend level.

Its difficult enough to find a parking space in Island Green, never mind a ‘free’ one.

on a side note, I’m amazed Brantano stayed open this long. It was overpriced and rarely busy. Just my opinion of course.

If I owned a car park where it was difficult to find a space it wouldn’t be going free any time soon.

Does this mean Iceland will relocate from Queens Square. That was one of their first ever shops I think.

Didn’t they have one on Lord Street where you could buy a quarter of vegetables, peas, carrots etc. or whatever amount you wanted? I feel sure that that was one of their first shops. About 45 years ago.

So if true, Iceland is opening literally metres from where Cool Trader has been for the past several years. Logic?

It is perfectly logical. Don’t you think they know who will be on the doorstep?

The problem is that most people do not understand how businesses logic works. It is often a case of opening close to your competition or a business offering a similar service. The idea being that customers are used to going to a certain area for a certain service. While they are in that area they are likely to come to you.

e.g. you will often find a burger place opening near to a pizza place or other food establishment. Many people do not understand this, they think it is bad for business, but in reality it is good for business. Companies like Iceland deal in “mega bucks”, they know what they are doing. ;-)

HMV is shortly going to be occupied by the Outdoor shop that is in Eagles Meadow- information came from staff member. Move due to wanting more space which is great news that a store has confidence.

Iceland signage is now covering the windows of the unit. Won’t be long now.

Didn’t Malcolm Walker start Cool Trader after he sold Iceland the first time?

True what Mike says about opening a business in close proximity to a similar one. Where Morrisons is there is a plan for an Aldi to go where the ambulance station is now, followed by a public house in the same area.
This is of course a redevelopment area and could be a few years off yet.
