The Scouts are hoping people have been inspired by the thousands of people who volunteered to be games-makers at the Olympics as they are on the look out for an adult to take on a role which changes the lives of teenagers across Wrexham.

They need someone to help them manage the Explorer Scout age range, supporting a team of around twenty adult leaders who provide the weekly programme for young men and women aged 14 to 18.

David Morris from Wrexham Scouts said, “We’re after a volunteer who’s good working with other adults, can lead a team, enjoys working with teenagers and who wants to help their local community.”

“They don’t need to have any previous experience in the Scouts, we’re sure the right person will be keen to learn on the job. We have a really flexible adult training scheme that gives volunteers all the knowledge they need.”

“Basically we have 6 Explorer Scout Units in Wrexham, each with a leader in charge. The person we’re looking for would support these leaders and their teams, coordinate joint activities, help with the operation of the Duke of Edinburgh’s scheme and work with other managers on the development of the Explorer Scout section.”

“It’s a great role in that the time commitment is really flexible. Probably on average about an evening a week, though some weeks may involve a couple of meetings.”

“The pay’s rubbish, but it’s a hugely rewarding and exciting thing to do with your spare time, plus you get to try lots of outdoor activities yourself if you like that sort of thing, and the social side is pretty good to.”

The Explorer Scout section has been one of the success stories which has turned Scouting’s fortunes around in recent years, bringing year after year of growth in membership. For the last few years Wrexham Scouts’ numbers have been up 10% each year.

The teenagers get to take part in a huge variety of activities like kayaking, cycling and sailing – who knows, the next Olympic or Paralympic gold medalist may be amongst their number. They also help with the community, learn how to be self sufficient, and go on expeditions abroad.
