Sorry for the pun about the bats–
The following observation may appear to be speculative but who knows it could become the basis of the fairytale that will become the Council Master Plan and their ‘Golden Triangle’ woven together with a ‘golden thread’. (Golden threads are senior Council speak).

    The Groves:
The Groves has a covenant on the land which is restricting the use for Education purpose only. If the original purpose of educational use laid down when the land was given to the Council they would have to pass the asset back to the original family heirs. On paper the site has no monetary value.

The deal with Coleg Cambria would have met the original covenant. The Council have given their statement about why the deal has fallen through – let hope Coleg Cambria are prepared to put their side of the saga into the public domain.

It is known that there is a blip in the capacity of existing primary schools and additional places are required.
Should all additional spaces be centralised in a possible new primary school on the Groves or capacity spread across the existing provision.

To be able to build/refurbish a school capital income is required — the solution the Council could be considering is to create a ‘through school’ primary and secondary on one site. Although Ysgol Rhosnessni was one of the remodelled super schools the land value from their site with playing fields is extremely high and part could be reinvested in the new school.

The sale of the Rhosnessni site for approximately 300 houses would help to meet the Council housing target with WG. Ask to see a copy of the proposed LDP for this site? Has the land use been redesignated?

“This” as the kids say …

Various shapes of Wrexham councils have sat on a fantastic facility and let it decay whilst fighting this covenant for probably 20 years. All with the intention of selling it off as valuable building land. It’s been a complete disgrace and all councillors and council officers involved should be ashamed. A great gift was given to the town with that single constraint but the money, energy and time wasted trying to overturn it has been outrageous.

Meanwhile schools were merged, the college built .. maybe 100m from there … yet it stood empty, boarded up and allowed to decay. The council has spent how many £millions on renting offices all over town while the Education Departments and educational Social Services could have used them as offices WITHIN the terms of the covenant. But greed and a disgraceful determination to ignore the terms of the covenant continued.

Would YOU trust them with a gift ?

I’m not sure I’d trust them with anything at all.

The funny one is that both St Josephs and Rhosnesni occupied the unit for 12 months whilst their respective sites were refurbished in turn back in the 2005/6 period. Perhaps some out of the box thought might have been applied back then

I omitted to include that the potential for the Groves site was not just as a Secondary but a through school to ensure that there was capacity for primary education whilst there is a boom in numbers. As the primary age levels off element of the primary part if the through school would convert to secondary education space.
Reference back to the discussion 2 years ago about making Ysgol Clywedog a through school.
This proposal is being put for the Council to consider on a free basis with no exorbitant consultants fee– I await to see what is on the site in 5 years time!
