wrexviewParticipantWould there be a new larger Board if there was an overall political majority in the Guildhall? With all the cuts, in areas like school transport , how can any Councillor vote to increase spending by £63,000 in this way. Will a larger Board alter any decisions made by the Council?

Daave63ParticipantYes but you are missing the point silly, it could save £1500 on some already poorly paid support staff!!

wrexviewParticipantThe Council’s reasons for stopping evening meetings !!
“Increased costs in terms of heating and lighting, in the region of £1,500 per annum.
Staff working long, unsociable hours to support evening meetings.
Whilst the majority of staff are not paid overtime for working the additional
hours involving evening committee attendance, they are entitled to take the time off during a normal working day at a later date. This clearly impacts on staff availability during the normal working day. With fewer staff resources available overall following redundancies and early retirements, such unavailability during the day can have a significant impact on service delivery.
Health and safety for Members, Officers and other committee attendees having to access their work to home travel arrangements potentially late into the evening.
No discernible evidence of increased Member or public attendance for evening meetings despite these arrangements being in place for a number of years. ”

99DylanJonesParticipantIf they were doing this for democratic reasons
1) they should have asked public would they attend meetings if moved to day time (hughly unlikly provoded they are all on the web)
2) Cost savings – this is a red herring as pointed out basic maths shows increased expenditure shows a net cost?
3) Unless they change the method of voting so that ALL Council Members vote on any topic then it will make no difference and all reports will go through on the nod.
4) What function will non Executive Members have other than keeping the seats warm!Bring back free vutes for all Members who should vote the way their electorate would want them to rather than their respective Political Party or Group.

wrexviewParticipantThe Full Council historically was the powerhouse of the Council and was always the place where ALL Councillors had the opportunity to air their views, resulting in open debate and sometimes heated exchanges!

D RKeymasterThe Full Council & Mayor Making are to be webcast next week – hopefully lots of people tune in to see what councillors have to say about the change. Know several aren’t happy with the proposed changes. Could make for an interesting debate.

I totally agree. Get rid of the Executive board (cabinet) and let ALL councillors have an equal vote with equal power. This may increase attendance and it will certainly increase the democracy of the whole process.

wrexviewParticipantIt would be really refreshing to hear from some of the ordinary Councillors for a change and for there to be free speech, rather than the staged production of the usual Webcast!

99DylanJonesParticipantWednesday night will see whether the ‘Independents’ are truly independent or whether they vote as a group to spend the £63k at a time when front one services are at risk. They have said that they are a group of individuals yet the whole process of the Executive shows they are one entity for the purpose of taking up seats on the Executive
