Wrexham council plunged into turmoil after 10 make shock decision to quit ruling party – Daily Post

There is a suggestion in this Daily Post article that a split over funding , or lack of it , of Plas Madoc could be a root cause of the split.

Forgive my ignorance here, but does this mean that Cllr Rogers is no longer leader of the Council? If so, does this honour go to the deputy leader? I’m guessing not as his is not in Labour.

I find it ironic that staff, from junior to senior, have probably gone through a great deal of stress and heartache over the past 3 years or so, with the clear message that they need to ‘keep it together’ and provide the service they are involved in with less funding and general resources, yet the Councillors, who are ultimately charged with deciding on the future of these services, cannot keep it together themselves!

I have nothing against Cllrs’ Rogers or King, but I do feel that this in-fighting does nothing to enhance the reputation of the council with the fair-minded people of Wrexham (not the Council haters or those with anti-Council agendas) and as a Town we need strong leadership and clear objectives and this sort of behaviour only detracts from that.

Don’t think it works like that with local politics. Smithfield’s Keith Gregory joined Plaid after being independent last year and it didn’t trigger one.

It doesn’t work like that in national politics either. Ya votes for a person not a party whatever you may THINK you’re voting for.

They’re still working on Hamlet. Which is not entirely irrelevant in the circumstances.

What matters, are the people of Wrexham. Every day that we are not focused on the ‘best education’ and ‘best support and services for those in need and for the elderly’ … we are all failing the community. If we do not have the best roads, and a strong reputation, we will not have the best jobs or industry.

Something is clearly very wrong at the heart of local governance, when the focus is on the debate amongst councillors, paid officers who advise them , and whether they are putting every energy into the community. With this sort of public debate, the community are obviously not getting the focus and service that they need, and pay for.

Is this an opportunity, or is it that the time has come, for all members of the Council, and the paid officers that advise them, to decide how they should effectively service the community …

The rle of the Leader of the Cuncil as per the WCBC cnstitution is to 2 Role Purpose and Activity
 Provide political leadership to the Council
 To be a political figurehead for the Council; to be the principal political
    spokesperson for the Council.
 To provide leadership in building a political consensus around council policies
 To form a vision for the Council and community
 To provide strong, clear leadership in the co-ordination of policies, strategies and
    service delivery

Not sure how Clr Rogers can fulfill these roles in the current arrangement

The successful process of governance for centuries has been based on the non executive overseeing what is done in the interests of the people, stakeholders, and shareholders.

Why do we not have councillors setting the vision, policies and financial goals of the council, and then the paid officers working to deliver those goals. This is how it works in most walks of life?

Why is the community paying councillors, and then paying full time officials?

In response to Oldboy744- neither Clr Rogers or any of the others on the Executive who have resigned the Labor Party have resigned their portfolio. It is a Full Council Meeting that appoints the Leader – this is not based on Political representation. However the Political Party with largest majority or coalition will obviously get the Leader they want as they will be the dominate number of Councilors.
The next step in this wil be to see if any of the 10 will resign their respective Portfolios and Charing roles on Scrutiny and Council.

It is wrong that debate and thoughts should be turning to how the Council is run, looking at it from a distance the Council is entrenched in its own world. Why is this behaviour allowed to continue, who funds it, who condones it

A fresh start would be good, the suggestion about appointing commissioners would be good, amalgamation into a larger authority with far less council members, and more focus on deliver by paid officials would be good.

If the current situation is leadership, it is akin to anarchy.
