EDF have just announced price increases in the region of 10%. Comparing like with like is almost impossible. Companies should either be told to abolish standard charges or be made to standardise them across all companies, then you would only need to compare unit costs. Do you know how much you are paying for a unit of electricity or gas?

Yes! I know exactly how much I'm paying per unit of electricity. I watch these compannies like a hawk. The sooner they are re-nationalised, the better. It's almost a licence to print money. If you think about the profit they're making, I'm sure this country can put it to good use rather than into the shareholders pockets.

Totally agree with OP, some have standing charges some don't it's virtually impossible to compare companies.
Imagine if petrol stations started doing this with petrol/diesel there would be uproar yet utilities seem to get away with it.

Another simple step the government could impose is standardised pricing across the country. At present each company has a different price tariff depending on which part of the country you live in. How do the companies justify that?

You pay standing charges regardless. You can pay standing charges of about 25p per day, but you can also get conned by 'no standing charges' by paying something like 28 p per first 225 units then the remaining units at 10, 11 or 12 pence.
