Wrexham born Robbie Savage will appear in Strictly Come Dancing 2011.

Wrexham’s most famous footballing son Robbie Savage is set to star in the BBC’s latest series of Strictly Come Dancing it was revealed yesterday.

He will be amongst 14 other celebrities battling it out to see who has the best footwork alongside One Show host Alex Jones, Aussie singer Holly Valance, boxer Audley Harrison, ex-MP Edwina Currie and actor and radio DJ Jason Donovan.

Savage, who went to Ysgol Bryn Alyn in Gwersyllt, ended his footballing career at Derby County last season and is currently enjoying a successful media career with the BBC doing commentary and hosting Radio 5 Live’s 606 phone in programme.

Speaking to The Sun he said that he fully expects a ribbing from his footballing colleagues for appearing on the show, he said: “I think Lee Dixon, Kevin Keegan and Chris Moyles will be the worst culprits. Plus, no doubt I’ll get some stick on Twitter from the likes of Rio Ferdinand. I know they’re all going to hammer me but I’m ready for it.”

However, despite having once been named as Premiership’s dirtiest footballer with a total 87 yellow cards, he added that he would not be answering back to the judges, he said “One thing my mother taught me is to respect your elders and respect people who know what they’re doing.”

The new series of Strictly starts on BBC1 this Saturday at 6.10pm.
