Wrexham Library is pleased to announce that giant print and Braille picture books for children are now available to loan.

The extensive collection includes children’s favourites such as Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell, The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Children are allowed to borrow up to 10 titles at one time from all Wrexham libraries free of charge.

Funded by Wrexham Council, the books are supplied by Access2Books, a community interest project which produces high quality early years books in 75 point, Braille and illustrations.

Shan Cooper, Children’s Librarian at Wrexham Library said:
“The unique design enables Braille or large print readers to read without obscuring the text or illustrations and therefore giving children and adults the opportunity to read together to improve educational and social relationships – the biggest contributing factor to children’s early years’ learning of language, confidence and social interaction.”

Users of these books are likely to be adults or children with macular conditions such as cataracts or other associated conditions. Children with learning disabilities or conditions that affect dexterity or co-ordination may also benefit from large print and illustrations to support their reading.

Cllr Hugh Jones , Lead Member for Communities, Collaboration and Partnerships said:

“The collection is a huge boost to both adult and children library service users who have visual impairments or learning difficulties. A love of reading starts at an early age and the popular titles in this collection will ensure that children and parents have sufficient choice to make reading an integral part of their home life.”
