Andy Bishop – What can Wrexham FC fans expect from him?

Wrexham’s new forward, Andy Bishop, signed on deadline day from Bury on a four month loan deal.

In terms of what we can expect to see from him, it’s obviously difficult to judge him on anything but his footballing record as he is yet to turn out in a Wrexham shirt. Luckily for this article, his record seems to speak for itself. The 2005-2006 season was arguably Andy’s finest and it saw him notch 23 league goals in 37 appearances (5 as a substitute) for York City, making him the Conference’s top scorer. He clearly has the potential, then, to reproduce this form for the reds this season.

His league goals in 2005-2006 attracted the attentions of many a club, especially as his services were available on a free transfer. He eventually signed on at Bury and finished his first season (2006-2007) with 21 goals in all competitions, becoming the first Bury player to score more than 20 goals in a season for 13 years. A great accomplishment considering his time away from the Football League. In the 2007-2008 season Andy scored 25 goals in 52 appearances. An interesting Bishop fact for Wrexham fans, he scored a goal and received a red card in a league game against Chester in December 2007.

The following season (2008-2009) for the 6ft striker saw him score 17 in 47 for Bury. Unfortunately, Bishop spent the majority of the 2009-2010 season side lined with injuries that required two surgeries. Hopefully Andy has doesn’t suffer any setbacks during his time at Wrexham. In May of 2010 newly relegated Grimsby Town enquired about Andy’s services but luckily for us, he chose to remain at Bury.

He is still under contract with The Shakers, until the end of the 2013/2014 season. Unfortunately unless Bury deem him surplus to requirements, a permanent move in my opinion doesn’t seem likely. However, hopefully during his at The Racecourse Andy can recreate the form that has made him such an effective goal scoring force in past seasons and take the Reds back to the Football League.
