In 2002 the family and friends of Garry Hyde were devastated when he died aged just 19 years. Ten years later they are holding an event to remember him and to raise funds for Wythenshaw Transplant Unit where Garry received treatment and Wrexham Scouts, of which he was a keen member.

Garry passed away on the 12th January 2002 after receiving a heart transplant at Wythenshaw hospital just ten months earlier as a result of a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy.

In memory of Garry, who was always smiling, cheerful and trying his best to make everyone else around him smile, his family and friends are putting on a talent show at the Brymbo Sports & Social Complex on Friday 5th October.

David Morris from Wrexham Scouts said, “I’m really pleased to be associated with this event as one of Garry’s former Scout Leaders. He is still sadly missed, but thinking about the character he was always brings a smile to everyone’s face.”

“Not long before his transplant Garry travelled with us on a mystery trip to Slovenia and Croatia. He didn’t care that he didn’t know where he was going, he was just up for the adventure, and it payed off as he absolutely loved it.

“Despite being the only one from Wrexham who went, he soon made friends and before long was the most popular member of the expedition.”

“Garry was a member of Squire Yorke Venture Scout Unit at the time of the trip, and before that was in both 1st Esclusham and 6th Wrexham Scout Groups. The Scouts are very grateful that Garry’s mum Paula has thought of us in this fundraising effort. We will make sure that the funds are used to remember Garry and allow more young people has adventures like Garry did.”

Tickets for the event are just £5, contact Paula on 07547718819 or Nadine on 07548768007, and can also be purchased on the door. Hot food will be available to purchase.

The organisers are also looking for anyone who has a talent who fancies taking part, and would be really grateful for donations of raffle prizes.
