Glyndwr University has maintained its fine form in collecting fees for late library books during the last academic year.

The figures revealed by a Wrexham.com FOI request show that in the 2011/12 academic year to date the university collected £9,387.29 in library fines.

The amount was down slightly from 2010/11 when they raked in £10,622.56.

The largest amount taken from tardy students was £11,958.49 in 2009/10 taking the grand total for the last three years to £31,968.34.

Most universities say that fines are reinvested in library services, however last year the National Union of Students for Wales called for clarity on how universities are spending collected library fines.

NUS Wales president Luke Young said it would be unacceptable if the fees were going towards core services that should be funded by the university.

In 2011 Welsh universities charged in the region of £1m in fines although only just over half of that was collected.
