Wrexham.com has invited Wrexham & Clwyd South Members of Parliament and Assembly Members to write a monthly article with updates on their work in their respective Parliaments and closer to home – you can find them all here.

Today, Wrexham’s MP Sarah Atherton writes…

The Welsh Government have recently announced further coronavirus restrictions. This is a worrying time, and none more so than for small businesses in Wrexham who are trying to get back on their feet. I, along with my colleagues in Parliament, continue to press the Welsh Government for further evidence and rational behind these latest restrictions. For the latest information, guidance and advice in regards to coronavirus, please visit my website, or contact me on the details provided at the end of this article.

Next month marks the 10th anniversary of Parliament week, an annual festival that engages people from across the UK and sparks a UK-wide discussion about our democracy, people and making change happen. I’m pleased that so many schools, community groups and local organisations have already signed up to be part of this conversation. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up using the link on my website.

In Parliament, I am sitting on the Overseas Operations Public Bill Committee, examining this landmark piece of legislation. This Bill presents an opportunity to combat the cycle of reinvestigation and vexatious claims, and to support our service personnel who have risked their lives in defence of our country.

Earlier this month I announced that I was going to chair a sub-committee, as part of the Defence Select Committee, into the experiences of women in the military. Women in the military and female veterans aren’t getting the justice they deserve and don’t feel that the military complaints system supports them. That’s why I’m kickstarting this national discussion about their experiences.

I continue to work with my Welsh Conservative Colleagues to secure opportunities for Wales as we transition out of the European Union; from supporting ongoing trade deal negotiations, championing the UK Internal Market, to ensuring Wales receives its fair share of the Shared Prosperity Fund. I will use my position in Parliament to ensure that Wrexham benefits from the opportunities that Brexit presents.

It was a pleasure to highlight the fantastic work of Valkyries Rugby in a debate in Parliament on Women’s rugby. A year ago, Wrexham rugby club set up the Valkyries rugby cluster, which recruits young women from across north-east Wales. It is vital that we continue to support local clubs during this difficult time.

I recently met with the team at Holt Community Allotment, which provides an incredible service to the area in and around Holt. The produce they grow there is often provided free of charge to those most at need in the local community. The stunning flower displays located throughout the village were placed by the HCA team, the sight of which brings joy to many as winter approaches. Because they are so focused on supporting the community, the National Lottery recently awarded them a grant for a new polytunnel, which will provide an accessible area that is sheltered and warm, encouraging those to get involved who might otherwise feel unable to contribute. Anybody willing to lend a helping hand should pop down and see the team!
